About This Cause
Calgary Outlink: Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity is Calgary's only dedicated LGBTQ2S+ non-profit serving agency providing peer support, education and resources. We have been in operation since 1984. What does LGBTQ2S+ mean? It is by definition lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, two-spirit & asexual people and their families, friends and allies. Or as we like to say - everyone under the rainbow! Our mission is to build people up to be resilient and strong in their lives through our peer support model. To that end, we offer different peer support groups to meet the needs of everyone under the rainbow from our Inside Out Youth Group that provides support for youth who are questioning their sexuality; Trans Families who want to support their loved one who is transitioning or the LGBTQ Senior who is facing the uncertainty of old age and how they will cope and find support as a gay elder. Peer support is recognized by the Canadian Mental Health Association for its value as an emotional and practical support between two people who share a common experience. A Peer Supporter has lived through that similar experience, and is trained to support others. Our volunteer peer support facilitators receive their training to deal with everything from group facilitation, gender deconstruction to trauma informed practice amongst several modules available to them. All training is developed by our in house professional team to the highest standards of current practices of the Alberta College of Social Workers and in line with Canadian Code of Volunteer Involvement as set forth by Volunteer Canada. Our volunteers, funders, staff and supporters are all community champions.
