Mission Statement

imagineNATIVE is a charity committed to dispelling stereotypical notions of Indigenous peoples through diverse media presentations from within our communities, thereby contributing to a greater understanding by all audiences of Indigenous artistic expression.

About This Cause

Since its first festival in 2000, imagineNATIVE has become the international hub for creative excellence and innovation for Canadian and international film, video, audio and digital media made exclusively by Indigenous artists. As well as being Canada’s premier Indigenous media arts event, we are now the largest festival of our kind in the world. Founded in part as a response to issues of self-representation (at the time of our founding the vast majority of films about Indigenous peoples were made by non-Indigenous filmmakers), imagineNATIVE continues to play a crucial global role in presenting innovative Canadian Aboriginal media arts. The media arts remain a vital means for Indigenous artists to reclaim their voice, express their perspectives and share their cultures. imagineNATIVE is a focal point where Aboriginal audiences meet to celebrate their cultures and support their artists. imagineNATIVE has been instrumental in supporting the careers of independent Canadian Aboriginal media artists and continues to hold their interests at the forefront of our activities. We are an artist-focused presenter and we remain committed to ensuring their works are seen by Canadian and international audiences in meaningful cultural and artistic contexts and we remain committed to developing their practises and careers through professional development opportunities, workshops and special commissions. imagineNATIVE ensures industry-standard artist fees are paid for all our presentations and co-presentations, even in instances where artist fees are not requested. We value Aboriginal media artwork for its artistic, cultural, social and economic value. The influence of imagineNATIVE on the regional film festival landscape has been profound. In a region with over 80 film festivals a year, imagineNATIVE has become one of the anchor events in this busy landscape. Where other festivals had historically few Indigenous-made media art works, many now actively seek this work for annual inclusion into their programmes. Likewise with larger, so-called “A List” film festivals such as the Berlin International Film Festival which presented a festival-wide spotlight on Indigenous Cinema for which imagineNATIVE played a key advisory and planning role. As a presenter we are committed to accessibility for our artists and our audiences. Our programming submission is open to Indigenous artists at all stages of their careers and we continue to be strong supporters of emerging and youth artists’ works through presentation and development activities. Our ticket prices start at $8.00 (one of the lowest in Toronto) with discounted rates to seniors, students and the underemployed, in addition to numerous free presentations. In addition to the annual Festival, imagineNATIVE also presents the free indigiFLIX Community Screening Series, the imagineNATIVE Film + Video Tour, and the Industry Series (panels, workshops and pitches held during the Festival). imagineNATIVE also undertakes special initiatives throughout each cycle – including commissions, research studies, and arts community development – that are not part of our core operating activities.
