About This Cause

Programs & Services Overview Taking Charge! is a program for single parents (of any gender) and women who wish to become self-sufficient by developing a career path that will support their families in comfort. Through personal development classes, participants prepare themselves for academic upgrading that will provide them with the eligibility they require to apply to a post-secondary University, College or certificate/diploma training program. Taking Jobs! is an alternative stream of service that is offered to women who are employment ready. One on one career counselling sessions provide assistance in preparing a resume, preparing for interviews and completing an independent job search. When Taking Charge! graduates complete their post-secondary education, they are encouraged to return for assistance with job searching. Taking Charge! recognizes that it is not easy to return to school as an adult and it can be difficult to return to the classroom after being away from formal education for a period of time. The personal growth programs offered at the beginning of Taking Charge! serve to remind participants of their resiliencies, introduce stress reduction techniques and build positive self-esteem while slowly introducing academics, exercise and healthy living and career exploration that matches interests with aptitude. These initial programs are approximately six months in duration. Participants then move into onsite classrooms for academic upgrading and preparation for continuing their academics at the Winnipeg Adult Education Center (WAEC). Taking Charge! partners with WAEC and continues to support participants during their attendance at a WAEC educational site, until they are ready to graduate with a Mature Grade 12. Students who have previously graduated grade 12 may still be eligible to attend Taking Charge! and the WAEC, as they may need to obtain specific credits or upgrade their skills in order to achieve acceptance into post-secondary institutions. As with many full-time educational programs, Taking Charge! exposes participants to work experience, to community engagement and to enrichment activities that broaden perspective and create opportunities for critical thinking. Computer skill development is integrated throughout the program. Taking Care! is the Parent and Child Development Center located on the same site as Taking Charge! The purpose of Taking Care! is to provide an onsite daycare centre that can accommodate infant and pre-school children while their single parents attend programming at Taking Charge! and upgrading at Winnipeg Adult Education Center. A secondary function of Taking Care! is to coordinate training programs related to parenting and to support and coach parents who want to enhance their parenting skills.
