Mission Statement
The mission of the Whitecourt & District Public Library is to provide a welcoming environment where all patrons have unrestricted access to library services and resources and intellectual freedom is respected. The Whitecourt & District Public Library’s vision is to be “the” community gathering place where everyone can come to relax, socialize, discover, learn, and entertain or be entertained.
About This Cause
Established in 1963 as a resource center operating out of the town office. In our current location since 1983. Small expansion added in 1995. Size of population served roughly tripled since 1981. What people want from a library has changed, and we keep adapting! Approximately 2400 active library accounts. Service area of approximately 16,000 people. We lend out from our collection of approximately 50,000 physical items which include books, movies, audiobooks, games, CDs, kits, and materials for the visually impaired. Each year we also run dozens of programs. Some are scheduled each week, some are monthly, and some are special events. Every day the library has an average of 3-4 things to do! We work hard to ensure our programs remain free and that we have something for all age groups and interests. We are a meeting hub for many community organizations and service providers. We partner widely with other organizations in the community including the schools, boys and girls club, service organizations, and formal government programs. People can access public computers, printing services, and wi-fi - even without a library account! This is especially useful for the underserved and marginalized populations in our community as well as for people who are passing through or visiting. Over 50,000 people walk through our doors in an average year. Our largest need is stable operational funding. Other than that, we are increasingly relying on sponsorships, donations, and volunteers to keep our library up to date, run programs, and keep our services going. A library is a very diverse environment, and our ability to partner and run projects makes us an ideal fit for various funding models and partners.
