Perseverance | You must endure all hurdles and roadblocks to reach your dreams. Integrity | You must strive to do what’s best and right, for you and the community.
About This Cause
Jack James High School welcomes students who may not experience success in their designated community high school. In the Calgary Board of Education, 19% of students meet the criteria for an Alberta learning code. In comparison, at Jack James, just under 80% of our student population have at least 1 educational code, which is assigned through a medical or psychological assessment. Our number of coded students is almost four times the percentage of the overall population of the board. Students who have these educational codes and exceptionalities are what make our site incredibly diverse and unique. There are many types of learners at Jack James. Some have multiple competing learning disabilities, while others have severe mental health challenges. Some students have complex medical needs, and many of our students have not only one but multiple unfunded codes. Currently, we have 129 students who meet the criteria for severe emotional, behavioral code. As well, approximately one third of our population identifies as Indigenous. Although it is important to discuss numbers and the complexity of our students, these numbers do not do our students justice on the tenacity, strength and resilience each of them has in regards to their learning and well-being. Our school uses a Trauma Approach Lens, as well as mental health and well-being strategies to support our students in their learning and daily lives. We are working to increase community health, wellness and engagement in our school and greater community. Our school covers costs, or reaches out to external supports, for students to participate in athletics and physical activity, as well as provides meals, grocery cards, winter jackets, and toiletries to many underprivileged students and families. Our students who participate in organized sports through the school leagues have their team fees supplemented by KidSport funding - we only charge $20 per sport and almost all families still request a fee waiver.
