Mission Statement

Facing the great need of good-quality care and training services for developmentally disabled children in Taiwan, “The First Children’s Development Centre” was established in Taipei City in 1980. Since then, in response to the increasing needs island-wide, we have stably expanded the range of services in terms of training targets as well as service contents, and hence transforming ourselves in 1997 into a nationwide social welfare foundation. Currently, within the 11 development centers and 3 group home and 1 assistive technology resource center, we serve about 1000 disabled persons of various types at different age levels;besides, we conduct many outreach programs. Our service programs are classified into four main categories:“children’s services”, “adults’ services”and “rehabilitation & assistive technology services”, “family supportive services”.

About This Cause

Launching: In order to help parents of children with severely developmental disabilities who had been rejected by special education programs in public schools in Taiwan, the foundation and training service programs were established by three women returning from USA with studies on special education in 1980. Expansion: Since then, in response to the increasing needs island-wide, we have stably expanded services, and have totaled to 11 developmental centers, 3 group homes and 3 assistive technology resource center. We serve about 1000 individuals and families annually. Main target categories of disability : Intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy and physical disability. Age range: 0-6 preschoolers, 15-55 adolescents & adults, over 56 elders. Main service programs : Care & ADL skill training, work skill training & community supportive employment, residential support and independent living training, recreation and community integration, rehabilitation therapy, assistive technology consultation, family support, case management, community support to aging people with developmental disabilities, community adult learning, etc. Mission: Help the individuals with disabilities to obtain equal respect and learning opportunities with warmth, enthusiasm and professional services. Vision: To become the best choice among the service programs for people with developmental disabilities and their most-trusted partner. Children’s services: 1.One to one teaching program 2.Small group teaching program 3.Day care program 4.OT,PT,ST rehabilitation 5.Community inclusion program 6.Elementary school transition program Adults’ Services: 1.Daily Life Skills Training Program To increase an adult’s independent domestic and community living skills as well as to enrich his experiences. 2.Residential Service To provide home-like residence for those whose families have difficulty in keeping them at home, focusing on daily care, health & safety, community access, leisure activity, interpersonal interaction, etc. Vocational Rehabilitation Services 3.Sheltered Employment Program To provide long-term and intensive vocational training in the workshop settings, the adults can choose bakery ,lunchbox making, mobile cleaning crew, etc. 4.Supported Employment Job coaches help disabled adults to find jobs in the community and offer training on sites, acting as the liaisons between disabled people and employers. 5.Social Enterprise To hire disabled adults to offer cleaning services for governments , providing an inclusively working environment. Extracurricular activities Sports & recreation programs : Various sport, art, music and outdoor activities for adults to choose to participate in the evening or over the weekend. Community adult school programs : We cooperate with community adult schools to provide opportunities for adults to be included in the community. Small dynamics groups: We set up “sex education group”, “social skill enhancement group” etc. to prepare for adults future career. Rehabilitation & Assistive technology Services 1.Rehabilitation Services The therapists provide physical and communication rehabilitation programs for those in need and guide care givers and parents to implement the programs in daily routine. 2.Assistive technology Services Therapist provide assessment and consultation about the appropriate assistive devices, device rental & repairing, and computer assistive device design. Family Support Services To provide resource information & consultation, parenting skills to parents, family gathering & leisure activities arrangement, transition services ,parents empowerment, etc. To offer grants for families encountered with poverty and high risks. Program Features 1.Individualized service plans Each service user is carefully assessed and provided an individualized service plan with goals and objectives to be reached annually. 2.Publications and Professional Sharing We have published 30 volumes of books and software covering instructional pedagogy for children with special needs. In addition, we conduct various exhibitions, workshops & seminars for direct care workers in Taiwan to improve service quality.
