Mission Statement
We are a local community located in an area by the Putumayo river, endangered by illegal crops, armed groups and economic pressures from the extractive industries. That's why we are devoted to the conservation of bio-cultural diversity in our territory. We do so by partnering with nature through artisanal fishing, agro-ecological practices for food production and lately, ecotourism with emphasis on bird watching. Our strong community bonds and results on the sustainability of our territory are the center of our positive social and ecological impact on the region. We provide guidance to neighboring communities on how to strengthen their community bonds, search for alternatives to illegal crops and activities, and cherish the true richness and abundance that nature provides beyond human greed.
About This Cause
We are an association of artisanal fishers and farmers based on the banks of the Putumayo River, in the municipality of Puerto Asís, Putumayo, Colombia. We work towards the sustainability of our community and territory by means of creating consensus around clean, fair and diverse community-based solutions to our common socio-ecological challenges. We have defined ourselves as an ICCA - Territory of Life, which are territories and areas conserved by indigenous peoples and local communities -a territorial structure upheld by the ICCA Consortium in partnership with the United Nations Development Programe (UNDP), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (UICN), among others. There are 28 families actively participating in our association, agreeing collectively on the guidelines to manage our territory and community life, aiming for bio-cultural conservation on the 488 km2 we now inhabit and that are currently surrounded by communities that are following in our footsteps towards sustainability.
