About This Cause
Colombia Diversa has set forth a benchmark and works in the defense and promotion of human rights, of the organization, and the interests and needs of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people in the country. With this direction, over 11 years of work, and through partnerships with different organizations and groups from academia and human rights activism in the country, significant progress has been made, including leadership and participation in the processes which led to the first and only acknowledgements that have been achieved in the country, resulting in the rights of same-sex couples. Colombia Diversa has also established itself as a source of information and opinion on the rights, interests and needs of the LGBT population; having led campaigns against discrimination and has played a role with effective defense measures for specific cases of vulnerability or violations of the human rights of LGBT people. To meet its objectives, Colombia Diversa has conceived and developed strategies for the monitoring and detailed tracking of the human rights situation of the LGBT community; having become a lobbyist for the rights of LGBT people and having implemented strategies for integrating political advocacy in the Congress, the Constitutional Court, the City Council of Bogotá, the National Procurator’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office, and having launched an intense and ongoing awareness campaign directed at mass media communication. And in order to work towards the eradication of discrimination, Colombia Diversa will also implement a strategy of community mobilization through partnerships with human rights organizations, women’s and other LGBT organizations. In recognition of the work of Colombia Diversa, its objectives and its institutional processes, several companies and cooperating international organizations have helped with their donations. The organization depends on a qualified workforce and a group of volunteers working in collaboration thanks to the internal communications strategy which have allowed us to establish and adopt routines of planning, assessment and monitoring. Among the different work strategies that Colombia Diversa applies to develop its objectives are: • Community mobilization: partnerships with various stakeholders NGOs (human rights groups, women’s and LGBT people, national and international) and with academia (universities and research centers). • Research on human rights. • Frequent integration of public policy. • Information and dissemination. • Monitoring national media (press, radio and television). To accomplish these achievements, Colombia Diversa has received support from organizations DIAKONIA, ASTRAEA, from the government of the United States through its Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Canada through the Canadian Development Agency (CIDA), the Norwegian Human Rights Fund, the Consejería en Proyectos, the Fundación del Triangulo and some municipalities in Spain.
