Mission Statement
Our aim is to make and end to homelessness, loneliness and mental health problems.
About This Cause
Ever since 1893 WeShelter has been fighting homelessness in Denmark. We support homeless people in the journey from homelessness to a life with housing and hope. WeShelter's experience is that many homeless people face new challenges when they move into their own home. For some, the transition from homelessness to living in one's own home results in loneliness. For a long time, their primary social contact has been with professional staff and other homeless people at the shelter or a the street. Hence it can be difficult to establish new relationships. And a farewell to the shelter often means a farewell to a community. After moving from away the shelter many have control of use of substances. When moving into their own home, loneliness might set in. Then it can be tempting to once again seek comfort in substances. Therefore, temporarily escalating abuse can also be a challenge. Poor finances are also a challenge for many. All experience shows that a good life in one's own home depends on responsible financial behaviour. Failure to pay rent and new unmanageable debt is a potential way back to a life of homelessness. Hence and effort must be made to avoid this. Life in one's own home is also depended on furniture and equipment. Many homeless people do not have many possessions and a low income. It contributes to a difficult start when one is not able to create a real sense of home in the new home. WeShelter supports the homeless in creating a good life in their own home through four initiatives: - Social relationship with a volunteer visitor aimed at combating loneliness and building a bridge to the local community. - Guidance and support from former homeless people who share experiences about life in their own home. - Financial counselling where volunteer counsellors help the homeless to restore their economy. - Furniture help which transforms the new house into a home where a good life can be lived. WeShelter also run social food clubs where volunteers and homeless and vulnerable people make healthy food and eat it together. WeShelter is a foundation founded in 1893 that runs community centers and shelters, works with volunteers and speaks for the vulnerable. WeShelter consists of the shelters Kollegiet Gl. Koege Landevej and RG60, both in Copenhagen. In addition, we run the community centers Pegasus, Project Offside and N.A.B.O. Center. Our joint secretariat also located in Copenhagen, works to put the conditions for the homeless and socially disadvantaged on the public agenda. In 1893, we were founded based on Christian values such as mercy and charity. In 2021, these values are still the foundation under WeShelter's work. WeShelter's basic human vision has always been that every human being is dignified. Regardless of background and profile, we all meet as worthy people. Until 2015, WeShelter had the name Mission among the Homeless. WeShelter's work is supported by public subsidies, as well as a patchwork of subsidies and contributions: From private donations funds, donations from individuals, and support from companies and congregations.
