Mission Statement

Beratung und Unterstützung für Menschen, die von Multipler Sklerose betroffen sind.

About This Cause

The German Multiple Sclerosis Association (DMSG) of Bavaria About 20,000 people in Bavaria suffer from multiple sclerosis. This disease is a progressive disease of the central nervous system, for which there is no known cure. The services of the DMSG are available to everyone affected by multiple sclerosis - including patients, their relatives and friends at any point of their life. Apart from free personal consultation the DMSG also offers self-help groups, technical lectures, various workshops and holiday trips for MS patients and their families. We advised over 14,400 people in 2019. Aside from the consulting service we also offered 144 seminars, vacation trips, talks and other events last year. Brief summary of the MS disease: When your body attacks itself MS is generally diagnosed at 20 to 40 years of age, although onset may be earlier. Multiple Sclerosis is an “inflammatory demyelinating” condition. This means it is caused by damage to myelin – a material that insulates nerves, acting much like the insulation of an electric wire. Myelin allows a nerve to transmit its impulses rapidly. In MS, the loss of myelin is accompanied by a disruption in the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain. This produces the various symptoms of MS. MS symptoms vary widely and include blurred vision, weak limbs, tingling sensations, unsteadiness and fatigue. For some people, MS is characterized by periods of relapse and remission while, for others, it has a progressive pattern. For everyone with MS, it makes life unpredictable. It is not possible to predict the individual course of the MS disease - this is why Multiple Sclerosis is also called the disease of the 1,000 faces. By now there is no drug that can cure MS, but treatments are now available which can influence the course of the disease. There’s many misconceptions about MS - it is neither contagious nor infectious. It is also not fatal or hereditary. Even the idea that the MS disease inevitably leads to a life in a wheelchair is not correct. For more information, feel free to contact our office in Munich.
