About This Cause

ASHA, the main project of Lotus Outreach e.V., empowers women and children through access to education, nutrition and health care in rural areas of Mewat, Rajasthan, India. We reach out to 36.000 poor families and 9.000 school children. Our goals are: · Organize nutrition days to cook healthy local food · Provide weighing scales to identify malnutrition and stunting · Implement Hand Wash Days in more than 30 schools each with 300 children. Providing soap is aimed to enable the habit of hygienic behaviour · Distribute sanitary pads to girls and women in 50 villages and to encourage them to produce own sanitary pads The ASHA, which stands for ‘Accredited Social Health Activist’, is a trained female community health worker, selected from the village itself and accountable to it. The ASHA is trained to work as an interface within the community. It is recognised that the ASHA’s have a tremendous amount of responsibilities and the local women trust them when it comes to health care, hygiene, nutrition and education. Their work includes special care for pregnant women, nursing mothers and adolescent girls. · ASHA workers will be trained to prepare nutritious food with the items available at home in the villages. The food will be cooked under guidance and will be served to children in the presence of their parents so that they all learn the process of preparing nutritious food at home. · In the project period 2021 Lotus Outreach‘s ASHA program plans to provide 30 health centers with weighing scales. The ASHA’s will be trained to monitor the children’s weight and to identify malnutrition. · ASHA workers will organize Hand Wash Days at 30 schools and will distribute soap to the school children during each event. Providing soap is aimed at enabling the habit of following hygienic behaviour and understanding how bacterial and viral diseases come about. · We are planning to distribute sanitary pads to adolescent girls in 50 villages. A further step is to provide sanitary pad making machines to interested women. This will enable them to produce sanitary pads on their own and make them accessible to other girls and women.
