Mission Statement

JB improves the quality of education at primary schools, provides information about HIV/Aids and engages in gender equality in the northwest of Tanzania. Sports teachers get a pedagogical training with a scientifically devel-oped, experiences-based learning concept and then im-plement playfully these topics in the curriculum. Taboo subjects can thus be addressed more naturally. During the sports competitions, the „bonanzas“, schools compete against each other and can win school building projects (with a 25% participation). This does not only lead to an improved know-how of the sports teachers but also to a better school infrastructure: the vital experience for all those who participate – pupils, teachers, parents, public institutions and supporting partners – enables the fact that only the active part of everyone at eye level can make a positive impact. The German mother company assures the financing of activities by fundraising and membership fees and deals with public relations and controlling.

About This Cause

Jambo Bukoba e. V. (NGO) was founded by the social entrepreneur Clemens Mulokozi. As a son of a tanzanian father he spent parts of his childhood in Tanzania and learned firsthand about the poor perspectives in that country. But first, his pro-fessional carreer took a slightly different course: being a manager in a huge European bank and leader of sports sponsoring, he became aware of the commercial poten-tial of sports. His experiences in Tanzania shaped him a lot and motivated him to develop a pedagogical sports concept with the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS) in order to improve education, health and gender equality for pupils in primary school in Tanzania. What began with volunteering quickly grew into the desire to continuing the mission full-time – and to fur-ther develop the impact of JB. In 2015, Jambo Bukoba was honoured with the national startsocial award by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. On his still new way as a social entrepreneur, he got the strength to confront the daily challenges thanks to his endurance as a marathon runner Clemens Mulokozi is Ashoka Fellow since 2015. Why is that so important? 44 percent of Tanzanians are younger than 15 years. In their thrive towards a better and independent life they have to overcome many obstacles – particularly in the area of education, health and gender equality: Only 40 percent of the female pupils finish primary school (2012) and many of them still cannot read and write. While most of the young people have heard of HIV/Aids, they don’t know how to protect themselves from HIV infection: 60 percent of the HIV newly infected are between 15 and 24 years old. Girls in Tanzania are not only disadvantaged as to educa-tion and health matters. The high rate of teenage preg-nancies as well as early marriages prevent women to lead a self-determined life. What kind of impact did JB achieve? Used ressources (2015) • Total budget: about 190.000 € revenu from private and corporate donations, membership fees and in-ternational organisations (UNOSDP) • Personnel costs Tanzania: 2 project managers /11.000 € • 25 volunteers working 5-20 hours per week (Germany) • pro bono-services representing approx.. 150.000 € Effects achieved (2015) • 10 teacher workshops, enabling 324 teachers from 247 schools to get the training „Life Skills Through Games“. Together they reach up to 123.000 male and female pupils in their schools. • 8 so-called „bonanzas“, in which 1.024 pupils take part in the „Life Skill Games“, a public competition in the presence of parents and members of the community. • 8 school building projects for the winners of the bonanzas comprising toilets, classrooms, teachers‘ rooms and desks. Impact on society • Highly improved - attendance rates of pupils - graduate rates of pupils in Primary Schools - female averade grades - girls‘ participation in sport - pedagogical know-how of sports teachers - number of schools providing sports lessons - knowledge about HIV/AIDS among teachers and pupils • active requirement of local communities to make a 25% contribution to the costs for school building projects in the form of working material and power as well as funds. • Improved hygienical and learn-orientated school infrastructure • empowered regional administration structures in the field of sports, health, education and gender equality Source: Interviews with teachers and district authorities What is the level of dissemination so far? By the end of 2016 and in the east-african region Kage-ra/Tanzania, JB reached about 1.200 teachers of approx. 1.000 schools who themselves, reached further 95% of all pupils from primary school (482.000). What are the plans of Jambo Bukoba e. V.? The key objectives for JB are impact measurement and organisational sustainability: • A local M&E-expert systematically evaluates im-portant data to identify the impact of JB. • In order to ensure a sustainable financial basis and to become more independent from donations, we are planning: (1) to offer CSR-cooperations and consul-tancy services for the government and for founda-tions in other regions (2) to subsidise the workshop participation of teachers. • A campus facility is planned to be set up in collabora-tion with the Ministry of the Kagera region in order to reach older children after they have finished Pri-mary School as well as young adults. The campus shall also become the central training center for teachers from all over the country.
