Mission Statement
To promote environmental sustainability, effective governance, economic empowerment, inclusiveness, protection and management of natural resources through research, advocacy, coalition building, education and engagement with communities and relevant stakeholders to facilitate the promotion of a healthy, safer and just society. 1.1 The purpose is: · To educate and promote a culture of environmental awareness and protection. · To support research and informational activities to increase public awareness of the environment. · To promote a local network of support and collaborate with Civic Society Organisations, Non- Governmental Organisations, Religious Groupings, Youth Groups, Women Groups, Vulnerable Groups, Local Authorities and Institutions with an interest in environmental protection and carrying out climate action activities that will bring transformation and promote sustainable development. · To ensure inclusiveness by promoting gender equality in environmental management, conceptualized and designed projects with a gender lens to guarantee gender sensitivity. · To perform an educational role in promoting an understanding of the inter-related nature of social, political, environmental and economic factors limiting or enabling the achievement of a sustainable, equitable and just society, and to promote the wise use and promotion of natural resources.
About This Cause
The Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Action (CSEA) is a registered non-profit organisation that promotes environmental sustainability, effective governance, economic empowerment, inclusiveness, protection and management of natural resources through research, coalition building, education and engagement with communities and relevant stakeholders to facilitate the promotion of a healthy, safer and just society. CSEA has been involved in environmental and sustainable projects since 2018 but the official registration of the organization was finalized on April 13, 2023. The work of CSEA contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDGs 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 13 and 15. and the work of CSEA aligns with the Environmental and Social Policies of the country. CSEA is being led by a woman, supported by well-qualified and experienced team members, with expertise and backgrounds to develop solutions that simultaneously address economic, environmental, and social issues in a holistic manner to catalyze long-term sustainable development. We engage different stakeholder groups including communities, local authorities, youth groups, women groups, smallholder farmers, institutions, and civil society, among others to carry out programmes that will improve the environment and bring transformation to sustainable climate solutions. We have over the years, led several projects and undertaken research, afforestation and restoration projects, tree planting, clean-up exercises, clean water projects, capacity building and training, education and awareness creation, health talks, Gender talk series and conservation. CSEA Activities World Environment Day 2023 – “BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION” The Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Action (CSEA) in Collaboration with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) As part of activities to commemorate World Environment Day on 5 June 2023, the Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Action (CSEA) representing Ghana joined with other national networks (Nigeria, Mali, and Burkina Faso) to conduct the GenderTalks organized by West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP). The 11th edition of WANEP’s GenderTalk Series under the theme: “Strategies for Achieving Inclusive and Sustainable Environmental Action: Prospects and Challenges.” The talk aimed to highlight the crucial link between women and the environment and emphasised the need to amplify women's voices for leadership roles in environmental management. The representative from Ghana, Mrs Eunice Oppong Asante who is the CEO of the Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Action, highlights major environmental issues of the country, including plastic pollution and illegal mining locally called Galamsey. She indicated despite Government and private sector effort to curb the situation less than 10% of plastic waste is collected and recycled from the 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated each year. The majority of this waste end up on landfill or in the ocean. In spite public health concerns, this has resulted in a devastating impact on marine life resulting in low fish stock. This has effected has affected the many fisherfolks along the five hundred kilometre coastline and impacts marine spaces. Significantly, women along the value chain have been impacted severely, jobs have been lost and this has impacted the livelihoods of families. She also emphasizes the impact of galamsey on Ghana’s forest reserves, water bodies, soil, biodiversity and society. Elaborate on the role of women in sustainability and environmental protection. Stating that the impact of climate change is not gender-neutral, since men and women have separate predetermine Economic Vulnerabilities. Hence, the enforcement of Gender Policies (Agenda 21 Chapter 24) gives women better representation, clear responsibility, resources and capacity to empower in environmental decision and ensure inclusiveness in protecting the environment. She also indicate the integration of women's voices in policy and implementation efforts throughout environmental management stages. She concluded by advocating for a strong collaborate effort and support from by government, civil society organisations, private sector and other agencies women to empower and give women the opportunity to play a role in environmental action. The GenderTalk Series was a success as valuable recommendations will be implemented to help maximise gains, expand reach and bring change to society. Green Ghana Day 2023 Edition - "Our Forest, Our Health" As part of the commemorative event to mark the 2023 edition of Green Ghana Day, basic schools and communities around Legon and its environs were invited to celebrate the day. The Green Ghana Day instituted by the President of Ghana is an annual event that enables institutions, schools, Civic Society Organisations (CSOs), farming groups, communities and individuals to participate in a tree planting exercise. This commitment signifies the country’s collaborative effort to restore its forest cover and combat the adverse effects of climate change. The 2023 Green Ghana Day was on the theme "Our Forest, Our Health." With a target of planting one million trees. Some members of the Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Action joined in marking the day and were offered seedlings which have been planted at the Animal Research Basic Primary School and within the office compound at Adenta, Accra. In addressing attendees, the President, Nana Akuffo Addo reiterated the importance of Green Ghana Day as a symbol of hope for climate action and highlighted the environmental challenges the world is facing. He indicated that despite the devastating effect of climate change on health and its impact on livelihoods it also poses a significant challenge to sustainable development. While echoing Ghana’s history of leading climate action, the President reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting the environment and urged all Ghanaians to join the national tree-planting exercise. He also encouraged students and young people who attended the event to participate in the one-student, one-tree initiative to instill a culture of tree planting among the youth. In adhering to the President's keynote message, the Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Action will continue to be proactive and collaborate with schools, small-scale farmers, other CSOs and communities to undertake tree-planting exercises and workshops, talk series and school debates, school gardening and other initiatives that would bring transformation and contribute to climate solutions. It has over the years, collaborated with institutions and local NGOs to mobilize communities and schools to carry out sustainable projects. The organisation is being led by Mrs Eunice Oppong Asante, supported by well qualified and experienced team members. The team is made up of experts in project management, climate change, Remote sensing and GIS, Gender and Community Engagement and Agricultural Economics. Members of CSEA have also been involved in a collaborative effort with international NGOs in Durban, South Africa and Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK). The CEO, Eunice Oppong Asante has over the years worked with South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDSEA) and its partners, engaging communities in South Durban to under projects in conservation, beach clean-up, health talk, community gardening, school tree planting exercises and air quality monitoring. She has also worked very closely with Friends of the Earth, Birmingham, UK with a particular focus on climate adaptation and climate refugee projects. Other team members within CSEA have also been involved in afforestation projects, recycling and Youth empowerment programmes. These may be a collaboration with donor funders or foundations which may be both nationally and internationally working in Ghana to achieve similar objectives. Non-government The environmental NGO Trax Ghana is a key partner in the work of CSEA. It has actively supported CSEA with capacity building, and strategic advice and has collaborated in carrying out projects. Members of CSEA has also been involved in a collaborative effort with NGOs in South Africa and UK. Eunice who is a member of the team have over the years work very closely with communities in South Durban to under projects in climate action and visited some polluted sites for air quality and monitoring. She has also worked very closely with Friends of the Earth, Birmingham, UK. Team members of CSEA have been involved in projects Academic CSEA has developed solid relationships with local academic institutions, which contributes to CSEA knowledge resource base while offering academics and students scope for socially engaged research. Volunteers CSEA also benefits from substantial local support in the form of volunteers from local communities and member organizations.
