We strive to provide a safe and loving environment for every animal in our care, and to work towards a future where every animal has a permanent and loving home. We believe that every animal deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, and that through our efforts, we can make a positive impact on the lives of both animals and people in our community.
About This Cause
Save a Greek Stray is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming stray animals in Greece. The organization was founded in 2008 and is run by a committed staff and a group of volunteers who work tirelessly to improve the lives of stray animals in Greece. Its main goal is to provide a safe haven for stray dogs and cats, many of whom are injured, sick, or abandoned. The organization works to rescue these animals from the streets and provide them with medical care, shelter, and a chance to find a loving home. Save a Greek Stray also works to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying and neutering animals to prevent overpopulation. There are more than 4.000.000 strays in Greece today We want to: 1. create a society in which no animal will roam the streets helpless and afraid 2. to make a better world for Pets 3. to establish an ambassadors’ program in order to unleash the collective power for good that associates can bring to the local communities Our methodology: -Educate Develop an animal friendly consciousness to students across the country -Protect Country-wide neutering/spaying program -Connect Stray cats and dogs with responsible, caring owners We mainly focus on two pillars Education and Spay Our programs: 1. shelter facility In 2014 we created a state of the art animal shelter that hosts our stray companions. Every animal has its own individual accommodation, and the shelter has a fully equipped clinic for first aid, neutering, vaccination and temporary hospitalization. 2. Adoption We focus on matching dogs in need with loving and responsible adopters who can provide them with a safe and caring environment. The process involves several steps, including an application, a screening process, educational sessions etc. It is a rewarding experience for both the adopter and the dog. Adopters gain a loyal companion and a sense of fulfillment while the dogs benefit from the love and care of a forever home. 3.Volunteer program Our volunteers are a vital part of our shelter since they are engaged in every aspect of its operation. They are also instrumental in rescuing and rehabilitation during our initiatives. OUR PROGRAMS ARE BASED ON THE NETWORK OF OUR VOLUNTEERS 4.A home before their forever home Foster Program Fostering plays a vital part in the rehabilitation of our animals and significantly increases their chance of finding a permanent home. We make sure to provide a safe and loving environment for dogs while they await adoption. The foster parent provides the dog with shelter, food, love, and care until it is adopted into a permanent home. 5. With endless love for strays A program including sterilization, vaccination & microchips Save a Greek Stray has designed and implemented the program "With endless love for strays". The program includes spaying/neutering, vaccination, and electronic tagging of strays, in collaboration with veterinarians and volunteers. Since 2018, SGS has been active in seven municipalities: the Municipality of West Achaea, the Municipality of Eastern Mani, the Municipality of Tripoli, the Municipality of Milos, the Municipality of Patmos, and the municipality of Epirus. This is one of our most important initiatives and it is expected to expand in many more municipalities in the country. 6.Following a four paws friend: The World of Pets An educational curriculum (Elementary Education) approved by the Greek Ministry of Education & Religious affairs We have created an educational program tailored to children’s needs that expresses kindness and love for animals. It focuses on safety and responsibility as well as on the existence of shelters. 7.Dog life: Living with pets An educational curriculum (Secondary Education) approved by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious affairs The program is designed by SGS’s experts and it is addressed to secondary education students (12-18 years old).
