Mission Statement

The mission of the Janos Bolyai Mathematical Society is to advance mathematical sciences, the mathematical education and the application of mathematics in Hungary. To reach these goals we further:  mathematical scientific research,  a wide range of application of mathematics,  solving of mathematics education issues,  promoting mathematics. We achieve these aims through programs, meetings and publications. János Bolyai Mathematical Society (JBMS) is one of two successors to the Mathematical and Physical Society founded in 1891 with the main goal to publish the Mathematical and Physical Journal and to organise reports on new results in mathematics and physics. In 1894 the general assembly founded a competition in mathematics and physics for students who had finished secondary school. Since its foundation JBMS plays a decisive role in the Hungarian mathematical life. One of the strengths of our Society is that it comprises both mathematics teachers and researchers. This ensures a solid framework for joint activities like adoption of new trends in education, making decisions upon experiments in mathematics teaching. From the very beginning our activity was separated into a Scientific and an Educational Department. In 1963 was formed a Department for Applied Mathematics. It is very important that the three departments work not only in Budapest but also in a large number of towns, many of them locations for branches of the Society.

About This Cause

János Bolyai Mathematical Society is an off-spring of the Mathematical and Physical Society founded in 1891, nowadays carries out the following activities 1. Education, academic competitions, talent care  Preparation of Hungarian teams through study groups, sorting contests, math camps for - the International Mathematical Olympiad; - the Middle-European Mathematical Olympiad; - the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad.  Annually organization of academic contests and memorial tournaments for elementary or secondary school or university students - Tamás Varga Competition - up to grade 8; - Dániel Arany Competition - no older than grade 10; - József Kürshák Competition - secondary school; - Schweitzer Miklós Competition - university students. 2. Conferences  László Rátz ”travelling-meeting”– in-service teacher training for elementary and secondary school math teachers, hosted every year by another Hungarian town;  Tamás Varga Methodological Days - a common event with the Mathematics Teaching and Education Centre of the Eötvös University;  international conferences organized together with the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics (Hungarian Academy of Sciences) and Eötvös University – workshops for young researchers, Summit 240, Erdős Centennial, Horizon of Combinatorics;  domestic conferences as the Applied Mathematics conference organized with the István Széchenyi University (Győr) or the Hungarian Operations Research Conference organized ever two years with the Economy Modeling Society and Hungarian Operations Research Society. 3. Journals and books  published in English (in cooperation with Springer) and more than 20 volumes in the series Bolyai Society Mathematical Studies  published in Hungarian: - ABACUS, - KöMaL, - Matematikai Lapok, - Érintő (http://ematlap.hu/index.php) online journal. 4. Memorial Awards for: - recognition teachers’ work in education and promoting mathematics the Manó Beke Prize; - researchers with outstanding results in introducing young people in scientific work the Tibor Szele Medallion; - young mathematicians with outstanding results in basic research the Géza Grünwald Medallion; - young mathematicians with significant work in various fields of applied mathematics the Gyula Farkas Prize; - career entrant math teachers to support their professional and didactical researches the Patai Prize.
