About This Cause
Overview: Saarthi Education is a high-impact NGO based out of New Delhi that guarantees meaningful improvement in students’ Numeracy outcomes. Saarthi is a community-led organisation which provides personalised learning opportunities to children from low-income households, especially in Grades K-5. Our model combines offline and online components that ensure a child gets daily personalised practice along with timely feedback. We are currently working with 5000+ students in Delhi and NCR region. The Problem: India, with an estimated 300 million children, faces significant challenges in delivering quality education to all. The ASER Report 2022 revealed alarming statistics, with 72% of Grade 5 students unable to perform simple division. Low-income households lack access to a high-accountability system and motivated teachers, hindering effective personalised learning for children. The Solution: Saarthi Education has devised an innovative approach to overcome the barriers to personalised learning. Our model leverages the strengths of community engagement, technology, and motivated women (and private school teachers) to deliver impactful education at a low cost. Content: Saarthi Education develops personalised worksheets for Arithmetic, following an incremental advancement theory. We have created a scaffolded set of 2200 worksheets comprising 100,000+ question banks. These sheets are created using LaTeX and Python to enable quick iteration cycles. Technology: A technology-driven platform ensures a personalised learning journey for each child. Diagnostic tests help determine the child's level on the curriculum ladder, and daily performance data is used to allocate appropriate worksheets. An external evaluator assesses students quarterly to validate their progress. Delivery: Saarthi Education adopts a hybrid model, delivering physical sheets for the at-school and WhatsApp-based online sheets for the at-home model. Trained female field workers and private school teachers from the community provide parent coaching through calls and face-to-face meetings. Operational Channels: At-home: Relationship Managers (RMs) build awareness and confidence among mothers to create an enabling learning environment at home. Worksheets are sent via WhatsApp, and Saarthi Trained RMs conduct home visits, providing personalised feedback and progression reports. This channel is cost-free for parents. At-school (Affordable Private School): Teachers dedicate an extra period to Saarthi worksheets, supported by Saarthi's School Representatives (SRs). Saarthi provides printed child-wise workbooks to schools, and children complete daily arithmetic worksheets. Monthly PTMs are held for feedback and progress sharing with parents. APS teachers are also trained in basic classroom management strategies (as these teachers have never undergone formal training). Current Status and Impact: We currently engage with over 5000 children across Delhi and NCR, achieving a remarkable 80% engagement rate and a 75% mastery in numeracy (indicating that 80% of the total students regularly complete the sheets and 75% progress to the next level). This impact has been made possible through the generous support of our donors, including IndiaMART, Max India Foundation, and Infoedge in 2023.
