Mission Statement
Total Health is borne of Dr Prathap C Reddy’s love of his village, Aragonda, and the need to give back. Total Health is based on the principles of medical care at the international level, and is implemented by people who understand the context and the communities we serve. Thus, Total Health ties in the heart, the head, and the hand. The standard Total Health cycle in all our locations follows a structured process, encompassing vital steps for optimal health and well-being: 1. Screen regularly: To detect health issues early. 2. Diagnose disease early: Enabling timely treatment and prevention of premature death. 3. Treat to save lives: Providing interventions for a better quality of life. 4. Educate for prevention: Spreading awareness to prevent diseases and promote behavioral change. 5. Empower for change: Facilitating individual and community transformation. At Total Health, our vision is to see an India that thrives with health of body, mind, and spirit. Our mission is to harness all that feeds into a community’s and an individual’s wellbeing, from womb to tomb.
About This Cause
Total Health provides holistic healthcare from womb to tomb. The organization works in India’s villages and forests, providing medical, social, financial, nutritional, and environmental security to those who have the least access to it. The focus is not just on the individual, but also on the context in which they live and work. People and planet are at the heart of all health interventions. Total Health’s flagship is in Aragonda, Andhra Pradesh, the birthplace of Apollo Hospitals’ founder chairperson Dr Prathap C Reddy. However, the Total Health programme is replicable in any area where there is need for rural development through a health lens. Living and working within a community, as it equips itself with the tools to usher in an overall healthier life, making the programme sustainable. The larger aim is to build community level assets and capacities and mobilize local resources so Total Health can, in time, move out of the area to another that needs its services. Total Health has established three distinct pillars that form the foundation for providing holistic health services to the communities we serve: 1. HEALTH A new Total Health programme in a village or district begins with a baseline survey, which is household-based and interviewer-administered. It uses the World Health Organization’s STEP-wise approach (capturing information on tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, diet, biological risk factors and more). Data is captured via a software, Medintegra. High risk individuals are advised interventions and drugs and are monitored, while those with medium to low risk are offered lifestyle advice. Under the Health umbrella, Total Health has established four distinct cornerstones that form the foundation for providing holistic health services to the communities we serve - Care, Nutrition, Mental Wellbeing & WASH. i) Health Consults: Empowering communities with healthcare through a network of health camps, mobile and satellite clinics, and teleconsultations. Our goal: ensuring consistent access to medical interventions for managing and preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) ii) Integrated New Mothers Care: Bridging gaps in maternal healthcare, ASHA workers provide nutrition, support, and approved protocols. Pre/postnatal care ensures healthier beginnings for mothers and babies in underserved areas. iii) Ayush: Reviving traditional Indian Ayurveda through accessible outpatient treatments and transformative therapies like panchakarma, revitalizing holistic wellness. iv) Nutrition Centers: Fostering community bonds through nourishment, Total Health's nutrition centers unite people, preventing anemia and malnutrition among mothers, reducing infant mortality, and enhancing children's birth weight. Our geriatric nutrition centers in Aragonda and Amrabad provide consistent access to hot meals, preventing diseases and disabilities among seniors while creating a sense of care and belonging. v) TB Mukth Bharath: Total Health collaborates with the Andhra Pradesh government in the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, providing essential nutrition kits to patients, enhancing well-being, aiding recovery, and boosting immunity. Committed to eradicating TB, Total Health aims to extend support to more patients across all locations, contributing to the larger goal of creating a TB-free society. vi) Cultivating a sustainable food future: Total Health's initiatives include diverse crops at the Aragonda campus, herbal gardens for Ayurveda, and promoting home kitchen gardens in Amrabad. Our pilot polyhouse farming project enhances yields and weather protection while raising awareness and support for farmers, contributing to a greener and more prosperous community. vii) Mental Well-being: Total Health prioritizes mental well-being, reintroducing yoga, organizing rural sports, and offering meditation sessions. Empowering emotional resilience, we aim to foster fulfilling, stable lives in communities. viii) Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Initiatives (WASH): At Total Health, we lead essential WASH programs, prioritizing hygiene education and clean water access. Through innovative methods and partnerships, our initiatives tackle water scarcity, promote sanitation, and provide vital menstrual health support. 2. ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOOD A part of a healthy life is financial wellness. So developing livelihoods and entrepreneurship programs through skill training for communities, particularly for women, and empowering them to overcome social, economic and environmental challenges, is an important limb of Total Health. i) Green Skilling: Total Health's Arrjava brand empowers indigenous tribal communities with green-skilling, creating locally sourced products and sustainable livelihoods. Our initiatives include crafting jute bags, harvesting forest honey, making wilderness-derived candles, cultivating mushrooms, and weaving bamboo baskets, all while preserving traditional skills and curbing urban migration. ii) Economic Development: Total Health empowers women through vocational training in apparel and jute product craftsmanship in Aragonda, fostering economic independence; in parallel, our collaboration with Blue Star Ltd equips young men with essential skills, addressing the need for refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians in rural areas. 3. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Total Health prioritizes holistic well-being, by bringing people together to foster a sense of community and share wholesome, healthy experiences, such as- i) Rural Sports Total Health's Aragonda complex offers diverse sports facilities, including football, badminton, and yoga, promoting community fitness. Their comprehensive sports initiatives extend to sponsoring premier leagues, organizing tournaments, and aiding local schools, exemplifying their commitment to holistic health and community development. ii) Education: Total Health actively supports government schools, enhancing facilities, providing essentials, and promoting a conducive learning environment for children. Through the Arrjava Warriors program, individuals from local communities become essential stewards, bridging cultural understanding, supporting health camps, teleconsultations, and fostering community engagement, connecting us to the heartland of India. iv) Philanthropic Tourism We offer immersive, purpose-driven travel experiences that blend nature, social consciousness, and sustainability. Participants engage with Chenchu tribal communities, fostering mutual learning and contributing directly to forest inhabitants' well-being and education, reinforcing the harmony between humans and their natural environment. v) Conservation & Climate Action Total Health embraces eco-friendly practices, converting skilling centers into Green Skilling Workshops, partnering with WWF for forest support, and actively engaging in native tree planting and waste management efforts.
