Mission Statement

Hundreds of thousands of kids from the under-privileged and neglected sections of society do not get any avenues for recreation, sports and career opportunities. The problem is acute with respect to urban poor and migrant labour communities living in metros. Divided families, unpredictable daily jobs and blind faiths and customs bear on the kids, robbing of their quality education, genuine recreation and career prospects. Ultimately, it is observed, they end up doing the kind of strenuous labour their parents are destined to. We aim to break the cycle of such misery by reaching out to such communities, introducing sports as a career option and recreational avenue. We find sports, apart from building physical fitness, helps youngsters develop their personality, imbibing qualities such as stress management, leadership, decision making skills, teamwork and self confidence. We also aim to bring gender parity insofar as number of girl-kids as our beneficiaries. One Thousand Hockey Legs (OTHL) is our flagship aimed at providing school children with an opportunity to understand, play and enjoy sports especially hockey being India's national game. we also seek to synergize sports with education. For that worked out a practical model as to develop each other, not at the cost of each other which somehow is the reality nowadays in India. At present we are running hockey teams in 25 Government schools in Delhi alone (each school will have age group teams, fitness facilities, education supplement workshops etc). This includes 7 girls only institutions. Since inception in 2008, each year we have been providing genuine sports exposure to minimum 500 students.

About This Cause

Education is costly and cannot be afforded to by the families of abovesaid group. They mostly enroll in schools, if at all, where quality of education is often questionable. Therefore, we approach schools and get permission to start sports teams and establish contact with kids and families. Then, step by step we promote a sporting culture in them while encouraging them to study. We supplement their learning meeting specific individual's interests and needs. Routinely, we conduct medical tests to assess their general well-being, weaknesses, deficiency etc. Once such tests are done, we take advice of dieticians and fitness experts for remedial measures. There is in general families of these identified groups are clueless or confused as to educational targets and future goals for their wards. There is general hesitancy to move to seek career avenues away from Academics. We counsel them on such aspects, develop confidence in themselves and in our works. It takes time but we make progress. Children always want to play, we use this our investment and work. We send coaches to school premises to scout talent and train regularly. The familes cannot afford to pay for playing equipment and sports wear, not to speak of training fee. Therefore, OTHL bears all these costs.
