Mission Statement

We envision a future where health and dignity are improved through safe surgery. Through our expertise in treating cleft lip and cleft palate, we create solutions that deliver safe surgery to people where it’s needed most.

About This Cause

Over 4 billion people globally lack access to safe and timely surgery. Today there are more people in the world dying because of lack of access to surgery than, HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria combined. Operation Smile ensures access to safe and timely surgery for people in India by providing life changing facial reconstructive surgery to children with cleft lips and palates. Operation Smile also invests heavily on health systems strengthening projects across the country. These investments help develop capacity and enable partner hospitals to provide safe and high-quality patient care. The first medical mission in India was in the year 2002. Since then, Operation Smile has conducted medical programs in more than 24 cities across the country. For about two decades, Operation Smile has stood as an advocate towards equity in access to health systems, pioneering solutions that have brought safe and effective surgery to hundreds of thousands of patients with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial conditions. Operation Smile’s network of volunteers includes more than 250 medical professionals from India, who donate their time and skills to ensure the all patients receive the highest and safest care they deserve. Over the last 19 years, Operation Smile medical volunteers have treated more than 42,000 patients in India. Operation Smile invests in rural health infrastructure to build capacity of health care workers. In partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA) and other training partners, Operation Smile provides Basic Life Support (BLS) training to physicians, nurses and technicians. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training is also provided to physicians and nurses enabling our medical consultants and volunteers to provide better care to critically ill patients. Cleft nursing training program and scrub nurse training programs enable health workers provide safe and high-quality care. Over the next five years Operation Smile wsihes to increase program capacity in India by five folds – Operation Smile intends to inaugurate three more comprehensive care centers and develop a hub and spoke model around them. This is in addition to continued investment in education programs and infrastructure in rural hospitals. Operation Smile is focused on increasing access to high quality and safe surgery for patients by pushing deeper into the periphery and ‘connecting the last mile’. Operation Smile has supported patient families for two decades when it mattered the most and will continue to do so and change the lives of thousands more now waiting for surgery. Together, we will continue creating a better world.
