Mission Statement

Railway Children India’s (RCI) vision is “a world where no child ever has to live on the street”. To make this happen we work at railway stations to identify and protect children who arrive alone and are at risk thereby preventing them from slipping into street life.

About This Cause

Across the world millions of children are forced to survive alone on the streets. In India, every five minutes a child arrives alone at a railway station. Immediately, they face violence, exploitation, trafficking and abuse. Railway Children aims to reach children alone and at risk on the streets before an abuser can. We work for long-term change for India's street children. Through our urban slum community interventions, we support families of vulnerable children to address their immediate needs with an objective to create and enable sustainable changes in the lives of children living on the streets. To maximize this safety and protection net Railway Children India (RCI) works with children, families, government, civil society organizations and other stakeholders at and around 10 railway stations across 7 states in India. In 2013 Railway Children India (RCI) was established as a non-profit company under Section 8 of The Companies Act, 2013 and registered under FCRA to scale the impact of Railway Children’s work in India. RCI is working with a singular vision of creating a “world where no child has to live on the streets”. RCI is working at 10 railway stations and in 30 slum areas, protecting around 9000 children every year of which 90% are reunified with their families. Railway Children India is a Resource organization for the Indian Railways nominated to train and sensitize their staff on child protection. OUR APPROACH We work and intervene at three levels for lasting and long term change • At and around the railway station: RCI aims to create a child-friendly eco-system at and around railway stations. RCI team works round the clock to reach every child at risk. The first response centre is located at the station as a Child Help Desk, to cater to the needs of every child identified. • In communities: RCI works to create a safety net for children within the community, by equipping them to keep their children safe. • With governments: Strengthening and working with existing child protection systems is key to ensuring long-term change, allowing RCI to have a more significant impact on child protection. In the last 5 years, Railway Children India has protected more than 21000 children and reunited 90% of children with their families. We have also trained more than 43000 Railway Staff including Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police and have sensitized more than 250000 passengers across India on child safeguarding.
