About This Cause
Introduction: The Public Charitable Trust " SHREERAM RADHAKRISHNAN MEMORIAL TRUST " has been set up in memory of Late Shreeram Radhakrishnan who left this planet earth for heavenly abode on the 3rd of December 2012 after a brief journey of nineteen years on this planet. Shreeram Radhakrishnan was an exceptional child who excelled not only in academics but also in a number of extra-curricular activities. His bright future was cut short by the deadly MDR TB Meningitis for no fault of his. It was only but natural for family members and friends to come together to do something really constructive in memory of Shreeram in the field of Education and also Educating the people about the menace of TB and, thus was born – SHREERAM RADHAKRISHNAN MEMORIAL TRUST ( SRM TRUST). Shreeram Radhakrishnan Memorial Trust came into existence in October 2013 and is a Public Charitable Trust registered under the Public Trust act of 1950. The Trust has been set up with certain objectives, the main being education. Under education, the main thrust has been to provide Educational Financial Assistance Awards to Needy Students ( EFAA), setting up free Coaching Centres for Needy Students (Shikshaangans), Computer Literacy and setting up of Science & Technology Clubs. Under Education, the Trust also undertakes Campaigns to spread awareness of the menace of TB. SRM TRUST’s flagship program is the Educational Financial Assistance for Needy & Underprivileged Students. Needy students from 1st Std. to the Final year of Graduation are being financially assisted. Starting with 25 students in the very first year, the number of needy students provided financial assistance to complete their education has risen to around 300 this academic year. The aspirations of the poor people in the cities are high. They want much better lives for their children and realize that the most important requirement to achieve this is through educating their children. They want to give their children the best education they can. Education in the cities is a costly affair. It is many times heart wrenching to see the poor struggling to pay the school & college fees of their children. Sometimes the students have to commute from places where there are no bus services and have to travel by autos to reach the schools. The students who are being provided educational financial assistance can be categorized as follows: a) Around 30% don't have father, and the mother is normally a rag picker or has a simple job. Few of the students are also orphans. b) Around 45 % of the students’ fathers are casual labourers (lifting loads, painters, working in the quarry area, etc.) and in a small percentage of cases the fathers are rag pickers. In these cases, the mothers are invariably rag pickers or work in the dumping ground and in some cases work as housemaids. c) Fathers of the remaining 25 % students are Watchmen, Postmen, Drivers or people having simple jobs. Visits to the homes of majority of the students who are being provided financial assistance will move anyone's heart. Selection of the Beneficiaries for Educational Financial Assistance: The Trust has designed quite a well structured selection process for selecting the really needy beneficiaries for receiving educational financial assistance. The aim is to reach out to the least financially equipped child and ensure that he or she gets to go to schools and colleges and graduates, doesn't drop out of studies due to paucity of funds, and also ensuring that the student keeps improving his or her academic performance. The selection process consists of: a) A well designed google form that each candidate needs to complete and submit. b) Preliminary review of the applications by the Committee. c) Conducting interviews of students and parents. d) Visiting the homes of applicants, if need be. We are happy that we have been instrumental in helping a large number of underprivileged students graduate. We are also happy that many of them have landed good jobs also. A thankyou from one of the beneficiaries tells it all: “The Trust and Sir Radhakrishnan have helped me and my younger brother to continue our education by helping us financially beyond their limits. I am really thankful and will never forget the help you did to us. My father died of cancer on 8th May 2020. My mother is a house-wife. I have a younger brother studying in class 3rd. I study in class 12th and have secured 94% in my 10th boards. Whenever I earn I would really like to help the trust so that the trust can help many more children like us. There are no words that can give justice to the help you did to us. May God bless Sir with long and healthy life.”….. Miss Siddhu Abhijeet More Another major Project of our Trust is setting up of Shikshaangans (Free Coaching Centers for Needy Students): In these centres the students underprivileged students are taught by appointed instructors during non-school hours. We work for the students all round development through personal interaction, counselling, confidence building measures, English learning sessions, making them feel that people care - by celebrating various functions with them, providing them with the necessary educational aids and other necessary requirements, taking them on educational trips, etc. Along with academics, a number of competitions are held like - drawing, elocution, essay writing, chess, etc. to encourage the children and develop their other skills. Cash prizes and Certificates are also given to the winners and the participants. We run ten Shikshaangans and plan to start one more this year. A total of 425 students (1st to 10th Std) attend these ten Shikshaangans. Volunteers also come forward to teach the children. We are happy that the students performance after becoming a part of the Shikshaangans has been improving. Some children as young as 10 years old can rattle of mathematical tables up to 30. Some of them know squares of numbers up to 25. Also one of the student living in the hutment got a special award in the State level. In order that the Underprivileged students at the Shikshaangans are not left behind in Computer Skills, we have given the students Tablets and Laptops which are shared between them. Computer teacher has been arranged to reach them basic computer skills. Rural Activities: We have upgraded the Village junior School's library and computer centre. In the Senior School of the village, we have revamped the school and the playground. We have employed a computer teacher in the Junior village school to teach the basics of computers. The teacher also takes library for the children, tells them stories and makes the children read story books. Computer Literacy Drive: As a part of our Trust's objective, we have been conducting computer literacy drive in two Municipal Schools and one Zilla Parishad School. Recognition of Meritorious Students : Every year we recognize and award a few students for their academic excellence in X & XII Board Exams. Medical : The Trust conducts TB awareness campaigns across schools and colleges and other institutions with the help of doctors who are ready to volunteer to propagate the noble cause. Booklets on TB in English, Hindi and Marathi in layman’s language are distributed to all participants. The awareness campaign has reached thousands of students and parents over the years. We have plans to expand the operation using social media. Vocational and Skill Development Courses : In order to empower ladies and students with skills to enable them to earn a livelihood, our Trust along with another NGO (Stree Mukti Sanghatana) have started Tailoring and Computer Courses at the latter's office at Koperkhairane. Every three months, 30 ladies with Tailoring skills and 40 students with computer skills graduate. These courses are running for the past two and half years. All the women who have acquired additional skills have already started earning additional income. We have also started the campaign to equip Underprivileged women with three wheeler driving skills. 16 ladies have obtained their driving licence and have already started earning additional income. General : We provide financial assistance in a small way to needy people to meet their medical expenses. During the pandemic we were blessed that our Trust could provide rations ( rice, wheat, cooking oil, pulses, and other essential items) to the jobless families equivalent to more than 20,000 sumptuous meals. We also provided protective gears to a large number of families during the pandemic. As and when need arises, we reach out to the underprivileged section of the society with help – For the past three years we have been providing a number of hutments with tarpaulin covers for protection against rain.
