Mission Statement
The mission of Neethi Vedhi is to support the survivors of atrocities, to instill hope in them to live with dignity and right consciousness and to stand for justice, peace and human dignity.
About This Cause
1)Counselling ================ The goal of counselling is psychological help to the victims of exploitation and atrocities are strengthened to face life to stand up and to fight for their rights. Parihara is the counseling wing of Neethi Vedhi to strengthen the victims of exploitation to fight for their rights and to face the adversities on their way. Human right befriending is found a very relevant tool to address family issues and strengthen women and children. A professional counselor gives counseling at our office. 2)Legal Assistance ================ The main focus of Neethi Vedhi from the very outset is to support the victims/ survivors of exploitation and abuse. It is to ensure that a non-judgmental and approachable space is available for the vulnerable sections of the society seeking legal support. a) Legal Counseling: Full time lawyers are available at Neethi Vedhi office to clarify legal options to those who are in need of support. If necessary, the lawyers will help to prepare petitions to the concerned authorities or take up cases in the law courts for the survivors of exploitation. b) Para Legal Workers: Field staff members visit hamlets and persons suffering from exploitation primarily to listen and provide emotional support in their search for justice. Petitions are prepared if necessary. Serious issues are referred to the office for legal and psychological counseling. c) Awareness classes and Legal Clinics: Legal awareness classes are organized at Panchayat or hamlet level on different topics concerned with Adivasis, women, children, senior citizens and other groups. Legal clinics are conducted to ensure remedy and justice at the doorstep. Adalaths and Befriending sessions with Government officials are also organized to address serious denial of legal rights. d) Public Interest Litigations: Neethi Vedhi takes up major issues affecting the human rights of marginalized groups especially the Adivasis and file PIL in the High Court. It is an important strategy to bring out speedy result to large number of people. e) Mediation: Neethi Vedhi devotes lot of time to resolve issues of conflicting parties for out of court settlement through mediation. This tool is mostly used to address family disputes, issues between neighbors, relatives etc. It is very helpful not only to settle issues but also to restore relationship. 3)Women Empowerment Programs ============================= From the very beginning, Neethi Vedhi devotes much time and energy to ensure women rights in the society in various ways. The role of women is highlighted in the very organizational set up itself. Women have been playing key role in running this organization both in the Governing Body and as staff members. We also network with different women organizations in addressing the women issues in this state. a) Service Provider: Neethi Vedhi is officially recognized service provider for supporting women survivors of domestic violence in Wayanad district. We associate with the Ministry of Women and Child in the state of Kerala in this regard. Legal and psychological counseling are given as and when required. b) Awareness sessions: Neethi Vedhi staffs are entrusted to organize classes for women especially in the Adivasi hamlets and other backward areas regarding their rights in the family and society. Kudumbashree groups, Anganwadies and other women organizations are collaborating in this mission. c) Women at Work place: Recently Neethi Vedhi has started giving special attention to ensure the rights of women at work place. Interactive sessions are organized for groups of women in plantations, textile shops and other enterprises. Trained staff members are entrusted to intervene in the issues related to the exploitation of women workers. d) Network to counter violence against women and child: Neethi Vedhi is always willing to join with other likeminded organizations and movements working to counter abuse, exploitation and violence against women and child. Gender equality is our priority and mission. 4)Youth and Children Programs ========================== Neethi Vedhi has formed a vigilance cell to give awareness and to counter atrocities against children in line with the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act 2012. Classes or workshops are arranged with the help of schools, human right organizations and other well-wishers regarding the ways to counter abuse of children and the legal remedies available to the survivors. Students Harmony Clubs: In order to foster respect to different religions, culture, ritual traditions and people of different economic backgrounds, harmony clubs are promoted in Schools and villages with students from different communities. They are given special training in fostering relationship with nature, ways to counter negativism and skills in social involvement. At present we have 15 students harmony clubs affiliated to Neethi Vedhi. Youth Peace and Harmony Clubs: Youth play active role in building peace in the locality. Often they are also victims/ survivors of violence. It is important to foster harmony among youth of a locality irrespective of religious or political affiliations to ensure peace and development in the society. 18 youth peace clubs have been initiated in different villages. They are encouraged to organize games, training programs and common celebrations in their locality. 5)Adivasi Empowerment Programs ================================ It is an attempt of Neethi Vedhi to bring together the Adivasi youth and encourage them to face life with hope and courage. Leadership workshops are conducted to develop their capabilities, foster higher goals and channelize their energy for the welfare of society. Emphasis is given to their role as change agents in their villages. Carrier guidance and dissemination of information and opportunities is very much part of this program. Youth are encouraged to form cultural troupes to perform street theater and folk songs in the hamlets to encourage students and motivate parents. It is heartening that a good number of our Adivasi youth got selected in Government jobs during the last few years. Kanal ===== Kanal is an innovative way to find the hidden talents within the young tribal children and to train them to develop their capabilities. Kanal is born out of our dream to foster values, leadership skills and artistic talents in students. At present we receive some financial help from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth to conduct this programe. The children are given coaching for the difficult subjects of their school curriculum. There is special training in singing, drama, dance, drawing, Tribal musical instruments, craft work etc. Through these the children receive a lot of confidence thus stage fear is reduced. Their creative and colorful evening cultural event is mind blowing. During Onam, Christmas and Summer vacations there are 3 days camp. They also receive an opportunity to see the world outside their home and surroundings through exposure visits. Another attractive fact is that the organizing team and the mentors of these children are the older youth who were part of this programe over years, the maturity and creativity with which they handle the children is inspiring. These children wait for the camp and show lot of improvement in their schools and at home. Unarvu ====== Unarv (Rise Above) is a concept that was emerged with the feeling that Tribal Students should be given extra care in education as they find difficult to adjust with the current school system. Students of mainstream society is able to cope up with this system as they are exposed to Play school, Pre- school, Parenting, Private tutoring etc before being admitted to regular schools. But students from the tribal community do not get such opportunity. Nor parents are able to help them as they are illiterate. This leads to poor performance, irregularity; drop out among the tribal students. To bridge this gap Neethi Vedhi initiated Unarv centers in 2013 at various harmlets. Qualified Tribal youth, who conducts daily classes, helps in their homework and guide the students in their studies. The functioning of these centers are monitored regularly. The students from Unarv centers have shown greater improvement especially in education and in their social relationships. The local administration has appreciated this effort of Neethi Vedhi and we hope that this would be a replica for the government to introduce for the Tribal students. 6.)Conflict Resolution & Peace Building ================================ It is from the experience of 15 years of legal interventions for ensuring justice to the marginalized sections of society that Neethi Vedhi decided to incorporate Conflict Resolution and Peace Building as a new approach. Diversity is to be respected not only in religious and cultural traditions, but also in relationships, orientations and approaches. It is important to understand the emotional and family background of the parties in conflict, their ultimate needs and goals, possible meeting points, etc in our efforts to find solution to a problem. The increasing polarization on the basis of religion, caste, political affiliation etc is a challenge to the harmony and unity among the people in a locality. Mutual respect and coexistence of different sections of people need to be emphasized from childhood onwards to check violence in the society. a) District and Panchayat Level Peace Forums: Neethi Vedhi has formed 25 Panchayat level Peace committees in Wayanad and Malappuram districts. Peace Committee members are chosen from different religions, communities and political parties who are respected in the locality. They are entrusted to make interventions in the local conflicts and to resolve amicably using mediation as a tool. The District peace Forum is a representative body with members who are influential in the district at large among different communities. b) Students Harmony Clubs:
