Mission Statement
Background Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave left a unique legacy of social work in India. Before Gandhi appeared on the Indian scene as a saintly political and social activist religion based philanthropy was in vogue. He metamorphosed the concept of social work. He called it constructive activity. His vision was that of building a non-violent society. One of his most distinguished and erudite follower Vinoba further refined the social action for reconstruction. The four founders of Sarvodaya Parivar Trust were staunch Vinoba followers and were in spiritual quest. The area they selected to live and serve is inhabited by tribal people whose contact with the main world was less than hundred-year-old. Among the plethora of natural plenty people languished in poverty and disease. Hence the initial effort was to provide them primary health care. It was combined with provisioning of foodgrain and material for shelter. Hundreds of families benefitted for nearly three decades. Slowly production of Khadi was set up with hand spinning and weaving units. Education was added next. Since the beginning of the twenty first century programmes relating to natural resource management for eco-restoration and improvement in agricultural productivity have been on course. Vision Sarvodaya Parivar Trust visualises a healthy tribal society with sustainable economy through natural resource based dignified livelihoods from agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and rural industry, and a society that is socially cohesive and culturally rich to establish Gandhi-Vinoba’s idea of Gram Swaraj. Mission Statement Sarvodaya Parivar Trust endeavours to relentlessly work for improving participatory democracy by encouraging every village people to enhance their capacities to take their own decisions with respect to their political and socio-economic development. We work on strengthening the quality of human beings in the villages by offering services in the area of education, health and enriching the natural resources. The education programmes for children is based on creative and skill based learning pedagogy. Our mission also is to restore the degenerated eco-system services and educate people to use the services for sustainable economic development. We are also on mission to educate them on lifestyle issues that have cropped up in the developed world and help them build simple and healthy lifestyles with reasonable methods for ease of living. Sarvodaya Parivar’s Mission is towards upliftment of Tribal area of South Gujarat near Dharampur town. The region is breathtakingly beautiful as the mountain range of Sahyadri is covered with dense green forest, sheer cliffs and rolling valleys. But even in the midst of this beauty, the tribal living there finds it very difficult to eke out a daily existence because the terrain is rocky, usable land for agriculture is scarce. The average rainfall is around 300 cms. during monsoon but there are no organised methods for water conservation. Thus, agriculture is entirely rainfall dependent which is insufficient for their subsistence. The conditions are so dire that in the months of March to June, they face a scarcity of drinking water. The villages in this hilly area are largely neglected by the outside world. Uplifting our fellow human beings from this state of deprivation is the humanitarian duty of society. Thus during 1968, Dr. Navnitbhai set up a camp in Pindval for medical treatment. Later on, in 1973 along with Dr. Navnitbhai, Kantaben, Harvilasben and Kantibhai who were strong followers of Gandhian and Vinoba’s philosophy started their work in this area. The comprehensive program of upliftment of Tribal have to encompass five major requirements of human i.e. food, clothing, housing, health and education. * The trust is run solely on contribution from over 1200 donors, without any government assistance. * We strongly believe that the participation of beneficiaries is must. The activity of trust is mainly conducted by local workers The workers who have completed tenth grade of education are trained in a skill and then assume responsibility for the trust activity. * Our philosophy of "Food For Work" is an incentive to the local people, as we provide food grain for their work in any activity like building a check dam or levelling or embankment rather than money. * 85-90 percent of the funds received from donations are directly appropriated to the overall upliftment of the local tribal people. Sarvodaya Parivar has received many awards in recognition of its work. This is a society's way of recognizing for whatever the activity SPT has mobilized for the upliftment of this tribal people during last 45 years. The real credit goes to the four founders of our Trust, namely, Dr.Navneetbhai Fozdar, Kantibhai Shah, Kantaben & Harvilasben. "
About This Cause
About This Cause After initial activity, in 1975, SARVODAYA PARIVAR TRUST was established. Later on, Basic need of value based education of tribal children filled up by starting residential school at Pindval in 1995.Today we have 211 students. In the year 2000, another residential school was started in bordering village Khadki by MS. Sujataben Shah, a very young and enthusiastic lady. Today we have 183 students in Khadaki center. She has been persuading all the work since then. The major work of helping and initiating the villagers to create check dams have been done. In last 13 years, 202 check dams have been built. At the same time land erosion was another major problem and so with villagers’ support embankment and levelling projects are taken every year before the monsoon. Thus, over the last 16 years, 10,488 farmers in 30 villages have created 11,805 embankments.14638 acres of land have been protected from erosion at the cost of rs.15.17 million. Apart from these herculean work, other ongoing projects are: 1) Establishing Nursery to help villagers to develop Village forest as there has been immense deforestation in the area. In Khadaki centre, women from nearby villages take care of saplings and have been able to create self-employment for themselves. 2) Farmers in the hills of this area, usually take only one harvest during monsoon only. However, the introduction of check dams, embankments and levelling of land now allows farmers to take additional crop during winter season. In last 13 years SPT has distributed 27000 Kgs of seeds at a subsidised rate in 31 villages for winter crop. 3) Each year, @250 tons of food grain is distributed by workers of SPT to the village workers on the basis of their work done for check dams and levelling of land. 4) The three main tribes in the region are Kukna,Warli and Koyda, Traditional Warli painting is quite well known to the world. This art is slowly decaying and hence SPT has decided to encourage and preserve this heritage art by holding workshops for this art among the children. The various artefacts like cards, table mats, handkerchiefs painted by warli art are being marketed by SPT. 5) Centre for vocational guidance: Because lack of work for nine months out of year when there is no agricultural activity, it has become necessary for one member of each family to move to nearby industrial area for employment. This condition has led us to provide support for vocational training for youths. We are now focusing on many forest based earning opportunities. Our aim now is to provide education for organic farming sourcing the latest development globally, and agro based cottage industries to generate income and occupations. One of them major effective is bamboo. We have leased 3acres of land and have cultivated 4000 bamboos of different species as a model farm. We intend to encourage farmers to grow bamboos. We have begun a new initiative to develop bamboo based products for domestic use and also export to urban markets. At the same time, we are focusing on holding workshops for bamboo based products which can provide good earning. SPT is now emphasizing the creation of multiple opportunities for year-round employment for people of this region by agro based self-employment. 6) Public awareness Programmes: (A) Prohibition of alcohol. (B) Forest land rights of tribal (C) Midwife training & maternity care (D) Micro-credit to support self-employment. In 2018, for a best functioning of Trust activity, we have appointed an administrator at Pindval campus namely Shri Savjibhai Bagda. We have been able to raise resources from the society. However, the we need to broad base our supporters in order to meet rising expenditure and expansion programmes that will benefit people in becoming self-reliant in some of the economic enterprises in a ten years perspective. We earnestly appeal to contribute in our humane endeavour.
