About This Cause

About LKS in Brief Brief History : LKS is a non-profit, non-political, voluntary Organization registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act. Lok Kalyan Samiti was founded in the year 1952 by late Sh. Kalyan Singh Gupta. He was supported by late Smt. Sucheta Kripalani and his friends and family to start this initiative five years after India’s partition, responding to the sufferings of lakhs of starving refugees in Delhi. On his initiative, 12 dedicated social workers came together and started work by contributing one rupee each (i.e. Rs.12/- in all) to mitigate the plight of the homeless refugees by way of arranging, mobilizing and providing free health check-ups, medicines etc. The selfless work and the untiring spirit of the “LKS Founders Team” under the able leadership of its founder General Secretary, late Shri Kalyan Singh Gupta, attracted the attention of hundreds of other social workers as well as national leaders including late Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, late Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, late Dr. Zakir Hussain, late Smt Indira Gandhi and many more. As a result, the “Present LKS” has grown manifold in its operational areas, activities, resources, etc. It has emerged as one of the “Apex National Voluntary Organizations”, serving the disadvantaged Urban slums and Rural poor communities in Delhi NCR. Activities : LKS offers comprehensive eye care services, provides basic diagnostic, medical and surgical services. These services include screening and treatment for common eye diseases such as Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetes-related eye problems, refractive errors needing spectacles and evaluation of visual impairment. The LKS Sucheta Bhawan Hospital located in the heart of the national capital, New Delhi provides healthcare and other services to not only poor and needy from Delhi and surrounding areas, but also from other parts of India’s northern states. However, it is the successful and ongoing Cataract Elimination Campaign started in 1975, that has emerged as the most effective service and earned it the reputation of ‘a Poor Man’s Eye Hospital’ for LKS. Over 33,78,918 patients have benefitted till January 2022 through LKS’s Eye and General OPD clinics, which operate on all days except Sundays. Also, 58078 modern, successful cataract surgeries have been performed till January 2022. Phacoemulsification method of cataract surgery has been restarted on a routine basis from January 2013. This is indeed a milestone in our journey of the ‘Eye Sight’ Restoration Program. Phacoemulsification procedure is a modern cataract surgery in which the eye’s internal lens is emulsified with an ultrasonic hand piece and aspirated from the eye. Sponsor A Child :- LKS has a successful “Sponsor-a-Child” programme in which economically and socially deprived children are adopted/sponsored for supplementary education and healthcare. We also run subsidised Craft Centre and Coaching Classes for Nursery to Xth class at our Nand Nagri Centre in East Delhi. For which we also accept donations for ‘Sponsor A Child’ programme. Apart from free Cataract Surgeries we also run subsidised OPD Clinics by General physicians, Homeopathy and Specialists in Medicine, Ortho, ENT, Physiotherapy and Dental.
