Mission Statement

Sarjan is very clear about why it does, what it does. At a philosophical level, Sarjan is putting all its energies towards building a strong sense of fraternity amongst people, leading to a higher ‘happiness quotient’. Sarjan’s Vision is of an India that is physically, intellectually, ethically, aesthetically, economically and spiritually developed. In trying to achieve this larger objective, it is contributing by its interventions in the areas of livelihood attainment, education attainment and health attainment. It strongly believes that these are the basic pillars of development and is aligned to the way Human Development is perceived globally (UNDP’s HDI).

About This Cause

Sarjan started contributing to society in a small way since 1997 and gathered momentum as time passed. At the source of Sarjan, are two senior lawyers, Vasuben Shah and Bhalchandra Shah, who switched over to working for Social Enterprises in the year 1998. Shailesh Patwari, former President Gujarat Chamber of Commerce, and Vasant Shah, a chartered accountant, (retd. Executive Director, Torrent Ltd.), joined them in their crusade. Later, the board of trustees was further strengthened when Savjibhai Dholakia, a leading diamantaire, Ravi Gopalan, a software architect, Jayanti Ravi, a career bureaucrat and Hemangini Sinha, a social entrepreneur, all with the common aim of social good, readily accepted the invitation to join as trustees of the foundation. Sarjan’s major initiatives for the disadvantaged sections of the society are as under:- 1. ‘Marg’ a Centre for Learning Life Skills set up at Amirgadh in Banaskantha District in the year 2007 (shifted to Rampura Vadla in Amirgadh Taluka in August 2019) to groom less educated youngsters in livelihood generating skills like wiring, turning, welding, fabricating, operating CNC lathe and VMC Centre Milling machines. 2. Roberts F Smith Technology Centre set up at Palanpur in the year 2016 for grooming graduate and undergraduate students in IT & IT enabled skills like Tally erp9, AutoCAD, Web Design and Mobile Applications to increase their ‘employability quotient’. 3. BADRI (Benevolent Accelerated Development and Reconstruction Initiative) Centre, a residential non formal school set up in July, 2018 for Xth & XIIth certificate from National Institute of Open Schooling. The pedagogy here shuns the concept of classes and encourages children learning at their own pace with some nudging where required. Essentially, expression/articulation in four languages-English, Hindi, Gujarati and Sanskrit (both written and spoken) along with mathematical rigour, is the backbone. Multi skilling is must. Great emphasis is laid on sports, arts and music, in addition to cattle rearing and agriculture. 4. Since the year 2004-05 every winter Sarjan organizes eyes check-up camps mostly in the rural interior of Sabarkantha District of Gujarat, in India, to screen cases of cataract and glaucoma apart from refraction check-up. Out Patients get their numbered specs on the spot there. Further their treatment is facilitated mostly in government aided tertiary care hospitals and if need be in Private hospitals as well. Impact Numbers 1. By August 2019, ‘Marg’ centre (Industrial Training) had groomed 2044 youngsters in diverse skills. None of these 2044 beneficiaries have remained without a placement or get a salary less than Rs. 12000 per month, in contrast to their counterpart unskilled youngsters who earn around Rs. 4000 to 6000 p. m. by drudgery. Trainees are regularly placed with Tata Autocomp, Welspun, L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Jyoti CNC to name a few. Striking feature of this training is that out of 2044 successful candidates 1366 have been groomed in 6 to 9 months’ duration training packages devised by Sarjan which does not bestow any recognized qualification. Still, they get placements on par with corresponding NCVT (National Council of Vocational Training) course trainees bestowing recognized qualification. Moreover 12% of these trainees have set up their own enterprise and are doing very well - providing livelihood to others. 2. By close of year 2019, RFS centre (Computer Training) had groomed 830+ Graduate and undergraduate candidates. Of them 560+ have been placed successfully. 3. By March 2021, Sarjan organised 289 Eye camps, examined 207328 patients, provided 117507 specs and facilitated 13720 cataract surgeries with lens implant and treatment of Glaucoma patients. 4. The Shakti Prantij centre has trained over 1100 village women on sewing skills, mehndi, crochet work and as beauticians. Over 3500 families have been positively affected. This intervention has made a definite impact on their quality of life and more significantly their mindsets to put the future generations through a learning process. Touching and so impacting human lives has immensely motivated our staff to deliver more and more.
