Mission Statement
Munnade Social Organisation is a grassroots, community-based organisation committed to empowering women garment workers and protecting their rights, dignity, and well-being. Founded in 2011 by former garment workers themselves, Munnade is uniquely positioned to understand the challenges faced by women in the industry. With its base in Bangalore, and operations across Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, and Tumkur districts, Munnade works at the intersection of labour rights, social justice, and child welfare. Our mission is to ensure that every woman garment worker experiences a life free from violence, exploitation, and discrimination—both at home and at work. We aim to achieve this by building awareness of legal rights, providing direct support services, promoting collective action, and enabling access to social entitlements and government schemes. We believe that women garment workers are not just labourers but mothers, caregivers, and community leaders whose voices matter. Our work is rooted in the belief that systemic change begins from the ground up, and that those affected by injustice must be at the forefront of shaping the solutions. Our Core Objectives: Empowerment of Women Garment Workers: Organising and supporting 45 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to provide access to low-interest loans, peer solidarity, and financial independence. Conducting area meetings and factory gate interactions to understand issues on the ground and educate workers on their rights. Education and Child Development: Operating four tuition centres and two Care and Support Centres that cater to the academic, emotional, and nutritional needs of the children of garment workers. Supporting access to scholarships, fee reimbursements, and supplementary education resources. Conducting teacher trainings, summer camps, and mental health counselling for children. Health and Well-being: Organising regular medical camps in collaboration with reputed hospitals to offer checkups and diagnosis for workers and their families. Providing psychosocial counselling and mental health awareness sessions for both workers and their children. Legal and Social Support: Offering legal aid for workers facing domestic violence, workplace harassment, wage theft, and denial of statutory benefits. Conducting training sessions on labour laws, gender sensitisation, reproductive health, and social security entitlements. Information Dissemination: Sharing timely updates on government schemes, welfare benefits, and labour rights via WhatsApp broadcasts, brochures, and community meetings. Promoting Leadership and Collective Voice: Training women workers to become leaders and facilitators who can mobilise, educate, and represent their peers in larger forums. Munnade is registered under the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA) and has 80G certification, enabling tax benefits for donors. Our work is supported by individual donors, philanthropic institutions, and concerned citizens who believe in gender equity, fair labour, and social justice. Our long-term vision is to create a society where women garment workers are recognised, respected, and rewarded for their contributions—not just in the workplace, but in the fabric of our communities. By addressing the interconnected issues of labour exploitation, gender-based violence, lack of access to education and health services, and systemic marginalisation, Munnade seeks to transform the lives of thousands of workers and their families. We move forward with courage, solidarity, and a deep commitment to creating meaningful, sustainable change—one worker, one family, and one community at a time.
About This Cause
Charity Description of Munnade Social Organisation Munnade Social Organisation is a grassroots, women-led non-profit working in Bengaluru, Bangalore Rural, and Tumkur to uplift and empower women garment workers and their families. Established in 2011 by former garment workers, Munnade is deeply rooted in the realities of one of India’s most vulnerable and invisible labour forces. The organisation works to build dignified lives for women who power the garment industry, ensuring they have access to rights, social protections, and the opportunity to thrive—not just survive. Our Core Areas of Work Women’s Empowerment and Worker Rights Munnade empowers women garment workers by creating safe, supportive spaces for collective action and dialogue. We support the formation and strengthening of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), helping women access low-interest loans, build financial security, and foster peer networks. We regularly conduct factory gate meetings and area meetings to engage women where they are, inform them about labour rights, entitlements, and share information about relevant government schemes. Through leadership training and capacity-building programs, we help workers speak out against exploitation and become active agents of change in their workplaces and communities. Munnade also educates workers on labour laws, their workplace rights, and how to read payslips—empowering them to challenge wage theft, unfair dismissal, and harassment. We work to prevent and address gender-based violence both at home and at work, offering legal aid and counselling to survivors and advocating for systemic change in policy and implementation. Children’s Rights and Education Munnade supports the children of garment workers through two types of holistic childcare services: Care and Support Centres (CSCs): These centres in Byatarayanapura and Guruguntepalya run from 8 AM to 8 PM, offering daily care for children aged 3 to 14. They provide pre-school care, after-school tutoring, activity-based learning, nutritious meals, and cultural education, especially for children from migrant families. Special emphasis is placed on mental and reproductive health awareness, environmental sustainability, and child rights. Parental engagement is fostered through quarterly parenting meetings. Tuition Centres and Student Resource Centres (SRCs): Operating in communities like Bangarappa Nagara, Shivapura, Chokkasandra, and Nandini Layout, these centres help children from under-resourced households access academic support, bridge learning gaps, and participate in cultural and co-curricular education. The centres recognize the limited capacity of working parents to support their children’s studies and step in to ensure children don’t fall behind. Munnade also facilitates school fee support and scholarships through collaborations with the Garment Workers Welfare Board and corporate CSR programs. We train teachers and caregivers to create nurturing, safe, and stimulating learning environments and offer regular counselling to children to support their emotional well-being. Health and Well-being Garment workers face a host of health challenges—musculoskeletal issues, chronic fatigue, reproductive health issues, and mental health problems. To address these, Munnade organises regular medical camps in collaboration with reputed hospitals. These camps offer free general check-ups, specialist consultations (including gynaecologists, orthopaedicians, and psychiatrists), and follow-up referrals. We also run awareness programs on nutrition, hygiene, and reproductive health. Munnade offers ongoing mental health and psychosocial support through counselling services, both to workers and their children. These efforts aim to break the stigma around mental health and promote healing and resilience in communities that often experience trauma and stress in silence. Legal and Entitlement Support Munnade provides legal support to women workers who face workplace harassment, domestic violence, wrongful termination, or wage disputes. We assist them in filing complaints, understanding legal processes, and securing justice. Additionally, we support families in accessing government entitlements—ration cards, health insurance, pensions, maternity benefits, scholarships, and housing schemes—ensuring no family is left behind due to lack of awareness or documentation. Advocacy and Solidarity Munnade believes in amplifying workers’ voices through policy advocacy, public meetings, and consultation forums. We regularly engage with state departments, welfare boards, and international bodies to advocate for improved labour standards, child rights, and gender equity in the industry. Through solidarity meetings and collective campaigns, Munnade fosters unity among garment workers, pushing for systemic change and accountability at the policy level. Organisational Approach Our approach is deeply participatory, community-based, and intersectional. We work closely with former and current garment workers, their families, local leaders, and institutions to build long-term trust and sustainable impact. With a staff primarily composed of women from the community, we ensure that our solutions are locally grounded and contextually relevant. Transparency and Compliance Munnade Social Organisation is a registered non-profit under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act and holds valid registrations under Section 12A and 80G of the Income Tax Act. We are also registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), allowing us to receive foreign donations legally and transparently. Our accounts are audited annually, and impact reports are shared with stakeholders.
