About This Cause
MANUVIKASA: Transforming Rural Communities Through Sustainable Development MANUVIKASA is a dedicated non-governmental, non-profit, and non-political organization committed to conserving natural resources, fostering sustainable livelihoods, enhancing rural education, and promoting community empowerment. Established in 2003 in Karjagi Village, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka, the organization operates across multiple districts, including Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Shivamogga, Udupi, and Haveri. These regions, which encompass the Western Ghats, coastal areas, and plains, face significant socio-economic and environmental challenges that MANUVIKASA actively addresses through its wide range of initiatives. One of the organization's primary focuses is water conservation and environmental restoration. With groundwater levels depleting at an alarming rate and traditional water bodies being neglected, MANUVIKASA has taken proactive steps to rejuvenate lakes, create farm ponds, and implement rainwater harvesting systems. By working closely with local communities, the organization has successfully developed 3,544 farm ponds, rejuvenated 281 lakes, and constructed 15,067 soak pits, conserving 9,200 million liters of rainwater annually. These efforts have directly benefited over 18,000 farmers by improving water availability for irrigation, replenishing groundwater levels, and enhancing soil fertility. Understanding that women are integral to rural economic development, MANUVIKASA has established Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) to provide financial inclusion and empowerment. More than 6,000 women have been trained in various livelihood activities such as catering, tailoring, beautician services, dairy farming, and sustainable agriculture. The organization has also facilitated over INR 96.75 Crore in microcredit, benefiting more than 25,500 families. With 3,049 SHGs and 1,366 JLGs established, thousands of women now have access to financial resources and entrepreneurship opportunities, helping them gain economic independence and stability. Environmental conservation is a key aspect of MANUVIKASA’s mission. To reduce deforestation and promote energy efficiency, the organization has developed 150 energy-efficient smokeless chulhas (boiling water stoves) and 250 improved cooking stoves, significantly reducing indoor air pollution and firewood consumption. Through these interventions, 7,800 kg of firewood is saved daily, preventing deforestation and mitigating carbon emissions. Additionally, the organization has successfully conserved 30,000 acres of community forests, further strengthening its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. To support farmers in maximizing their income and market opportunities, MANUVIKASA has promoted five Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) and one Farmers Producer Company (FPC). These collectives empower farmers by providing training in sustainable farming practices, product value addition, and direct market access. By reducing dependency on middlemen and enhancing value chain efficiencies, farmers are able to achieve better pricing for their produce, ensuring increased profitability and financial security. In addition to working with farming communities, MANUVIKASA has a special focus on marginalized groups, particularly the Siddi tribal community in Yellapur. The organization provides them with alternative livelihood opportunities, including training in sustainable agriculture, horticulture, and beekeeping. MANUVIKASA has distributed honey bee boxes, set up non-timber forest product processing units, and supported poultry farming initiatives. In the Dongri Gram Panchayat of Ankola Taluk, Uttara Kannada District, 150 Siddi households are receiving support through NABARD-assisted projects, which include SHG formation, leadership training, livelihood support through honey bee and poultry farming, health and hygiene awareness programs, and exposure visits for tribal women. These interventions aim to build long-term economic sustainability for Siddi families while preserving their cultural heritage. Fisherwomen in coastal regions are also a key focus for MANUVIKASA. The organization has provided training in modern fishing techniques, value addition, and marketing, benefiting 500 women and helping them increase their earnings. By equipping women with better skills and access to markets, they are now able to sustain their livelihoods and contribute more effectively to their household income and community economy. Education and skill development are fundamental to MANUVIKASA’s long-term vision for rural progress. The organization has distributed educational kits and scholarships to 2,970 underprivileged children, ensuring that they have the resources to pursue their education. With the support of the EdelGive Foundation under the Nari Shakti Greenway Project, MANUVIKASA has established a Continuous Training Center (CTC) to equip youth with essential skills for employment. Located in Sirsi, Haliyal, and Yellapur, the center offers diverse training programs such as advanced fashion designing, retail marketing, office and accounts management, photography, and video editing. These initiatives help young individuals develop marketable skills, increasing their employment opportunities and financial independence. To further enhance digital and financial literacy among rural communities, MANUVIKASA has collaborated with the SMILE Foundation to organize training programs on tailoring and digital banking awareness. Through these initiatives, women in SHGs are gaining knowledge about safe digital transactions and financial fraud prevention, enabling them to participate more actively in economic activities and banking services. Addressing malnutrition among adolescents is another critical aspect of MANUVIKASA’s work. In the Mundgod block of Uttara Kannada District, the organization has identified and supported 25 malnourished adolescents by providing them with nutritional supplements. Their progress is monitored through assessments based on BMI, height, weight, arm circumference, and other health parameters. This project has led to significant improvements in adolescent health and has demonstrated the effectiveness of targeted nutritional interventions in rural communities. During times of crisis, MANUVIKASA has provided essential relief and rehabilitation support to disaster-affected communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization distributed dry food kits to over 12,000 families and facilitated vaccinations for 51,000 individuals. It has also supported flood victims by distributing 850 shelter kits in Kumta, Honnavar, and Ankola blocks of Uttara Kannada, as well as in Udupi and Byndoor taluks. In collaboration with Amazon, DonateKart, and Ashraya Hastha Trust, MANUVIKASA has provided critical supplies, including tarpaulin sheets, plastic covers, buckets, sanitary pads, mosquito nets, and nylon ropes to families impacted by floods and natural disasters. MANUVIKASA’s impactful work has been made possible through strong partnerships with philanthropic organizations such as Azim Premji Foundation, EdelGive Foundation, The GROW Fund, Give India, Deshpande Foundation, HDFC Parivartan, HDBFS, Ashraya Hastha Trust, SMILE Foundation, CMS Foundation, Coca-Cola Foundation, HSS, CAPCO, Vattikuti Foundation, UNDP SGP, Sanghamitra, Amazon, DonateKart, Microgram, and NABARD. Their continuous support has enabled the organization to scale up its interventions and create meaningful change in rural communities. Looking ahead, MANUVIKASA has an ambitious vision to further expand its initiatives over the next five years. The organization aims to rejuvenate 1,000 lakes, develop 10,000 farm ponds, and uplift the income and livelihoods of 1 lakh households, with a particular emphasis on empowering poor women, small and marginal farmers, and tribal communities. By integrating water conservation, sustainable agriculture, financial inclusion, and community empowerment, MANUVIKASA is working towards a future where rural communities can thrive with dignity, self-sufficiency, and resilience.
