About This Cause

An Initiative Touch Your Soul (AITYS) is an all-volunteer charitable trust founded by Mrs. Madhu Chowdhry in 2012, helping the underprivileged and working towards providing them with a better life. Our initiative officially begun in 2012 with helping a few people, but with each site visit and interaction in rural Uttarakhand, we have been able to better understand the 360-degree aspect of the challenges being faced by the people in a remote, rural region of Uttarakhand . This has enabled us to strategically design specific solutions for our area of operations. Over the years, AITYS has grown organically and gained success in all its initiatives. The reach of our initiatives is primarily focussed in the region of Pauri district and adjoining areas of Uttarakhand state. This is because this region has a very high school drop-out and migration rate. The epicentre of our work is in the region between Devprayag and Pauri towns. Through the years, based on our need and impact assessments, our programs have grown, evolved and been moulded to the needs of the region and its people. As we have grown, our work and goals have expanded and the impact is increasing. AITYS today supports 40% of higher secondary schools in this region. We work with the belief that that “No child should be deprived of education because of poverty” and understand that to achieve this, we need to look beyond just the effect and also focus on the cause of the problem we choose to eliminate. This holistic approach has helped us achieve much with negligible administrative costs in the last 7 years. Our current primary programs are as below :  School Infrastructure Aid Program – Pauri region has an existing network of primary and secondary Government schools, however the current infrastructure is largely outdated and needs a transformation. Many of these schools have yet to be equipped with any updated modern technology to support interactive teaching techniques. Most schools need furniture, books, durries, computers, audio-visual aids, electrical equipment, sports equipment, and more, to function properly and create impactful learning. Infrastructure initiative builds in a component of updating current school infrastructure and adding new ones based on individual school’s requirement. To have an enabling learning environment, the basic infrastructure should be in place, and so we are helping build and maintain toilets & classroom, while also helping improve & maintain existing infrastructure. We also provide students of the school with items such as shoes, track-suits, sweaters, t-shirts, socks, bags, steel bottles, steel tiffin boxes etc. to make them comfortable and focus on their studies. All school children are additionally given Multi-vitamins and deworming tablets for healthy growth and better health. This program has the primary focus as we have seen that the impact of this program is huge, especially in the long-term.  Child Education Sponsorship Projects - Owing to the policies of the Government of India and the State Government, elementary education in the region is free (till Class 8). However, maximum dropouts happen during the initial phase of secondary education (Classes 9 and 10), largely due to inability of the families to financially support their children. This is where AITYS steps in. Through the schools, AITYS reaches out to needy families and deprived sections of the society and spon¬sor their children so that they have the opportunity to complete their education. The education sponsorship projects includes a cheque that aids a child’s education for one year towards school fees, school uniform, text books, etc. Over the last few years, some wonderful success stories have emerged from this program. Thousands of students have received annual sponsorships and many more have started working harder to strive for this.  Free Medical Camps – The region Region between Devaparag and Pauri has negligible, or in some areas, no medical facilities. Villagers walk for miles to reach a road, wait for public transport and then travel for hours before they reach a medical facility for assistance. Additionally, poorly equipped local health centres, with insufficient staff makes right to basic health facility for a common villager a distant reality. AITYS team reaches in the proximity of these remote regions to give professional medical support. These facilities are made available at various central locations from small shed-type bus stops to government school compounds. They include free distribution of non-prescription medicines, health checkups for school children, their families and villagers in general. Thousands of villagers have benefitted from this.
