Mission Statement
Bangalore Baptist Hospital Society (BBH) was founded on the 15th of January, 1973 by the International Mission Board (IMB), of the Augusta, Georgia- based Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), USA. SBC. Having already supported setting up of mission hospitals in 17 countries, they were keen to start a hospital in India and finally decided on Bangalore to establish BBH. The hospital is a not-for-profit institution providing healthcare to all; regardless of religion ethnic, social or economic background. It is a Registered Society and is governed by the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, since 1989.
About This Cause
From humble beginnings of starting a clinic for the poor in a “chicken coop”, it has, over the past 43 years, metamorphosed into a 340-bed multi-specialty hospital serving up to 2.6 lakh outpatients and 21,000 inpatients annually with a staff complement of 1200 persons. The priority of the hospital is to serve the poor, and the hospital sets apart 15 % of its annual revenue for poor patient care. The underlying principle followed in the hospital is that no patient is turned away due to their inability to pay for their medical treatment. Over the years, BBH has won several awards for teaching excellence, quality, operational excellence and is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and the Charities Aid Foundation of India. The priority of Bangalore Baptist Hospital has always been to reach out and provide healthcare to the poor and marginalized in and around Bangalore. As early as 1975, teams of doctors and nurses began going to villages to serve the poor and needy. The Community Health Division (CHD) continues this mandate to this day. Its mission is to initiate strategies & programs that would make a difference to the lives of the poor & marginalized groups living in the rural & urban areas of Bangalore. Starting off with a small complement of just 3 staff members and limited funds, the division has grown in terms of the area of coverage, scope of services and staff numbers. Now as the outreach arm of the hospital, we reach out to a 1 million population living in over 900 villages of the Bangalore Rural District and another 1 million living in the slums of Bangalore city. CHD now has a staff complement of 60 staff comprising of doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, field workers and administrative support staff. In addition to providing accessible, affordable, ethical and quality primary care through its rural hospital, urban health centers and mobile clinics, the division has developed several innovative community-based programs that have been recognized both nationally and internationally, such as: • The Saving Hearts program to reduce mortality and illness due to heart attacks and strokes • The Empower program for providing comprehensive disability services to about 40,000 people with disability • The Restore program – a de-addiction, restoration, and rehabilitation program for alcohol- dependent persons • The Senior Citizens program for the elderly • The Palliative care program serving the urban as well as rural populations through home-based care • Early Child Development and Nutrition Rehabilitation Program for the children of the slum (6-36 months). Besides, the division also trains undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in primary care and family medicine. Institution-based as well as community-based research is an integral part of the division’s work. We provide opportunities for students from India and overseas to study public health and engage in academic research.
