About This Cause

Critical issues and challenges facing the education sector in India. One of the biggest problems facing development space in India is providing quality education to underprivileged children and this challenge is much more in Uttar Pradesh (UP). With Right to Education (RTE) enrolment % of children in schools has gone up but quality of education remains a deterrent to the progress. Since inception, the foundation has impacted the lives of ~30,000 children by partnering with these two unique and successful models. In the academic year 2023-2024, E&H Foundation is supporting the education of 6200 children in association with the Bharti Foundation and Education Support Organization;s (ESO) GyanShala model. E&H (Education and Health) Foundation was set up in 2012 with a vision to provide quality health and education to the underprivileged children in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), the largest state in India with most dismal human development indicators. After doing in-depth research, E&H Foundation started its journey from Farrukhabad by identifying and collaborating with the two models for primary education: Rural & Urban. Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2016 finds that 57% of the Class V children in UP cannot even read Class II Hindi textbooks. These precious years spent in school with no learning is a huge loss to these underprivileged children and their families and takes away any potential opportunity of these children emerging out of chronic poverty. E&H Foundation aims to address this critical problem at scale. Setting up E&H Foundation to tackle the growing education crisis in India E&H Foundation was set up in September 2012 to ‘enable quality education and health services for the underprivileged in India, with a special focus on Uttar Pradesh.’ Since inception, E&H Foundation has enabled quality education for approximately 30,000 children in three districts of Uttar Pradesh – Farrukhabad, Lucknow, and Kanpur. In 2023-2024, we are educating 6200 children 50% of whom are girls, in partnership with two proven models. Since the issue of quality education demands scale, we decided to employ the strategy of building long term partnerships with implementing organisations, which have proven successful and replicable models on the ground, as well as with like-minded individuals and corporate houses, who understand critical development challenges and want to address the inequities in our society. So far, we have partnered with two uniquely different yet successful models providing education from classes 1-5 and achieved huge impact on the ground. More than 80% children in our program are first generation learners and over 50% students under the program are girls. Founder Trustees provided initial seed funding to launch the program on the ground and since then we have steadily developed partnerships with over 10 corporate houses and over 500 individual donors to fund our programs. Our trustees continue to fund all overhead costs thus ensuring 100% of all donations going directly towards the education of children under our programme. Rural Model Bharti Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises, was established in 2000 with an intent to develop a scalable and sustainable education model that can be replicated on a large scale by the government, educational institutions and like-minded organization. With this vision, E&H Foundation partnered with Bharti Foundation in 2012 and set up three schools in Shamsabad district of Uttar Pradesh. In partnership with Bharti Foundation, E&H opened three primary schools in Farrukhabad district. Currently, the total strength of students in Class 1-5 stands at 720 students. Urban Model Gyanshala is one of the largest non-government school education programs for underprivileged children in India, currently operational in 9 districts across 4 states of India. Started by Prof. Pankaj Jain in 2000 in Ahmedabad, Gyanshala’s model is cost effective and scalable and has enriched the lives of over 2,50,000 children since inception. In 2013, E&H foundation partnered with Gyanshala to bring this model to UP, one of the most dismal states in India to address the lack of quality education in the region. In partnership with Education Support Organization’s (ESO) Gyanshala model, E&H supports education of children from urban slums in Farrukhabad & Lucknow districts. Currently, the total strength of students in Class 1-5 is ~ 6200 students, out of which 50% are girls. Key achievements in the last 5 years Enabled quality education for more than 30,000 children, from classes 1-5, in three districts of Uttar Pradesh – Farrukhabad, Lucknow, and Kanpur. Positively impacted underprivileged children and their families. More than 80% of students are first-generation learners, and 50% of the students enrolled are girls. Achieved high levels of learning with independent assessment by Education Initiative showing our students performing at par with the best CBSE schools in India. Developed partnerships with over 10 corporate houses including BlueDart, HDFC, InfoEdge and more than 500 individual donors to fund the programme. Overview Since inception, E&H Foundation has provided quality education to 30,000 children from Std 1-5 in 3 districts of UP – Farrukhabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow. More than 50% of students being educated by E&H Foundation run-classes are young girls, helping bridge the gap between male and female literacy rate in UP and in India. Independent studies show that the students have consistently attained grade-appropriate learning scoring 100 -150% higher marks compared to government school children and almost comparable to India’s best CBSE schools at ₹5000 per child per year, creating scaling-up potential. Independent assessments show, children, receiving education through these models, perform at par with the best CBSE schools in India. E&H Foundation is aiming to reach 100,000 children by 2030 through expansion in more districts of Uttar Pradesh. The impact created in the last academic year 2023-2024 2023-24 was a significant year for E&H Foundation where we directly implemented education program in 60 villages in 2 blocks of Farrukhabad district. Under this program we took three interventions as mentioned below 1 Back-to-School Campaign was run in 40 government schools in partnership with school teachers. This campaign engaged with 1586 children through rallies and door to door campaign and we managed to bring back 250 children back into schools. 2 We also helped 70 students with Vidhyadhan scholarships enabling them to continue their education without financial constraints 3 Under an innovative peer learning program, 140 student leaders taught 738 students ( 397 girls and 341boys) for one hour each on a voluntary basis promoting spirit of voluntarism and creating an environment of education within communities and villages A lot of effort, training, workshops were organised by teams to achieve the above significant initiatives in a short time. We are very excited by these innovations and local community is enthused by these initiatives. We would like to further strengthen these initiatives and make them robust. Through our partnership with Gyan Shala we provided education to 4,600 students in UP and Bihar. According to external assessments, 70% of our students achieve grade-appropriate learning. Average 75% attendance rate was achieved. There was enrolment of 49% girls in UP and 53% girls in Bihar.
