Mission Statement

JAGORI (AWAKEN WOMEN) is a women’s documentation and training centre set up, with the aim of spreading feminist consciousness to a wider audience using creative media. Jagori undertakes action research studies, supports capacity development of urban and rural women on issues of women’s rights and gender inclusive governance, and provides support services for women survivors of violence. Jagori has in recent times, pioneered the work on women’s safety in urban spaces. Jagori is active in policy dialogues and law reforms on issues of ending violence against women.

About This Cause

Jagori has undertaken trainings, workshops on gender, development, livelihoods, violence against women with women works with men and with civil society and community groups largely in Northern India and towards empowerment and development of poor and marginalized communities. It provides relief to women in rural/urban areas through services of counseling, legal assistance and trains women survivors of violence as para-legal workers. The relief of poor sections of society is a charitable activity as defined by the Income Tax Act.The main activities carried out with respect to different areas are as follows;
1. Research studies: Jagori has undertaken studies in marginalized communities on key issues of women’s development, entitlements, safety and security. It has worked closely with the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Delhi to conduct surveys and safety audits and to build safe cities for women. The Safe City Initiative is a joint programme of Jagori, Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Delhi, UN Women and UN-Habitat and was launched by Prof. Kiran Walia, Honorable Minister of Women and Child Development, Delhi Government in 2009.
2. Jagori runs a gender resource centre for information the Hindi speaking belt of Northern India. These includes materials like posters, newsletters, journals and sharing schemes, etc. It also prepares information packs such as on Dowry, sexual assault, violence against women, etc. It compiled informative and relevant news articles in Hindi “Dekhi Suni” on different issues like women’s empowerment, the women reservation bill, health, shelter, honour killings, child sexual abuse, right to information, women’s safety etc. and a quarterly magazine “Hum Sabla” in which articles on different issues such as domestic worker rights, honor killings, etc. by different writers are put together. These two publications talk about the recent debates on various issues related to women and also gives a simplified understanding of them. There are various other productions such as training materials, CDs, flash cards, Helpline and Sexual Harassment booklets etc. which are produced by resource centre. Jagori supports community workers through a fellowship programme. They work on emerging issues such as MNREGA, domestic violence Act, land and forest rights, rights of domestic workers, etc.3. Women’s Leadership in Communities: Jagori works in JJ re-location sites of Madanpur Khadar, Bawana and Bhalswa on issues of ending violence against women, youth leadership development, citizens’ rights to ration cards, access to education, health and other basic entitlements.
It undertakes trainings of the Nigrani Samiti - a group of women community leaders who in turn work with the larger community and ensure they can improve their issues of water and sanitation, ration, health, education, etc. They have undertaken safety audits and worked with the local authorities to have more improved access to water and sanitation in their resettlement colonies and improve drainage and water supply.
4. Trainings and Capacity Development: Jagori reaches out to women, youth and men of all ages through its annual Gender Course, thematic and advanced courses, short sessions and long term accompaniment. The programmes address NGO functionaries, social workers, grassroots leaders and gender trainers through its training programmes. Jagori has also conducted gender sensitization sessions and workshops with teachers and students of schools and colleges; government institutions; Delhi Transport Corporation, international and UN agencies.
5. Services for Violence Against Women: Since 2004 Jagori has been providing direct support services through counseling and referrals to survivors of violence, accompanying them to police stations and courts and shelter homes. Jagori also works with men and their families, so they can support in preventing violence. This also includes sensitization of the police protection officers and the mahila panchayats.
6. Jagori works with sister organizations to undertake studies and plan educational interventions and make due representation to policy makers and implementers. Jagori has been on several panels in national and international meetings and has highlighted the issues of women’s political participation, access to public services, good governance and elimination of VAW.
The above activities undertaken by Jagori that are charitable and are for women empowerment, relief to poor and marginalized communities.
