About This Cause
Over the past 21 years we have developed a network of children’s groups in the Indian state of Uttarakhand to enhance the role of young people in transforming their communities on issues that are important for them, with a focus on - the right to child participation and the right to child protection, health, sanitation, nutrition, education, gender equality, the environment – climate change and disaster mitigation. Currently we are working in a total of 63 villages in the districts of Dehradun and Chamoli Uttarakhand. Our focus in on - Child Protection through our partnership with, Child Participating with 60 vibrant Bal Sangathans created in 60 villages. We focus on preprimary education nutrition and growth in anganwadis and the role of the communities in ensuring that these are vibrant centers in 27 villages. We strengthen the School Management Committees in primary schools so that they can ensure that their children can get their rights under the Right to Education Act 2009. We provide remedial support to primary school children in Math and English in 26 villages In a year we reach out to – 900 infants; 2755 adults and 7000 children. We indirectly impact a population of 30,753 people. Our Impact MCF’s child-driven model¬ — equipping the youth with knowledge, leadership and communication skills¬ — builds a platform for them to discuss their concerns and find realistic, locally tenable solutions. Along the way, children gain the self-confidence to become highly effective purveyors of information and persistent advocates for the causes they believe in. Because the challenges are as varied as the communities themselves, we focus on a wide range of issues, from child rights to health & sanitation, education, nutrition, gender equality, the environment, disaster mitigation, social problems, civic engagement and more. Across Uttarakhand, you can find evidence of dramatic transformation wrought by the children –persuading their own communities to understand and change habits related to hygiene and sanitation to ensuring 100 percent birth registration in their communities and pushing for gender equality, talking about the environment and getting their community to change its perspective, negotiating for better facilities in their schools, vibrant anagwadis and healthy babies. Our impact spans multiple generations: The children themselves, their parents and, as these engaged, empowered children reach adulthood, their own children. Mountain Children’s Foundation was awarded the Children Champions Award by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on the 14th of November 2022. Stories of Change Environment Conscious Chetna Bal Sangathan Ask for trees to plant In a village called Ambadi in the Vikas Nagar Block. MCF has created a Bal Sangathan that the children have named Chetna Bal Sangathan. There are about 40 to 45 members in this bal sangathan and the children discuss child rights, child participation, child protection health nutrition and sanitation as well as how to safe guard the environment. The children understand the environment and their social responsibility towards their environment. They wanted to speak with their Pradhan (Head of the Village) so they spoke to their facilitator and drafted the letter. On the 14th of June 2023 Rohit the president of the bal sangathan and a few other members got together and met with their Pradhan(Village Head) Madhuri ji and requested her to give them 40 trees some fruit trees they said they would plant in their homes and some in the forest by their village so that the monkeys and other animals would not have to come out of the forest for food. The children had not waited for their facilitator to come with them to visit the Pardhan as they felt confident enough to meet with her on their own. The Pradhan Madhuri Ji was supportive as she knew of all the good work the bal sangthan had carried out in the village with a special focus to sanitation and hygiene through the healthy home surveys. She promised to provide them with the trees when they came from the block but told them that they would have to ensure that they would look after the trees they planted. The Bal sangathan members assured her that they would be responsible for the trees that they planted. In July the trees came and were given by the pradhan and planted by the children. 75% of them are still alive.
