About This Cause
Genetic Resource, Ecology, Energy and Nutrition Foundation (GREEN Foundation) has been working in the state of Karnataka on agrobiodiversity conservation for the last 25 years. It has a vision of a well preserved, diverse ecosystem that will sustain the rural livelihoods of the present generation without eroding the resource base of the future. GREEN Foundation works with small and marginal women farmers and focuses on conservation of agrobiodiversity and sustainable agriculture. A small farmer’s challenges broadly fall in three key domains, i.e., resources, ecosystem and policy. Resources like seed, land, water and energy are getting limited and scarce. As we progress, there are competing demands on these resources. Since agriculture in our country is largely rain-fed in nature, change in climatic conditions is making agriculture less viable and risky for a small-holder. The policy environment related to different aspects of agriculture does not address small-holder or women farmers adequately. What can be done? How do we empower small-holder farming? GREEN Foundation adopts following strategies to address the challenges faced by small-holder: Conservation of agrobiodiversity – Maintaining genetic diversity through preservation and propagation of traditional variety is central to agrobiodiversity conservation. GREEN Foundation works with about 2,500 women small-holders, who lead the biodiversity conservation work. Through Community Seed Banks, women farmers conserve traditional varieties of seeds for peer-exchange. GREEN Foundation has conserved 110 Finger Millet varieties, 80 Paddy varieties,17 other millet varieties,50 vegetable and 10 varieties of pulses. Promotion of sustainable agriculture - GREEN Foundation facilitates organic farming under the Participatory Guarantee System, which is done in active collaboration with farmers. They adopt traditional methods of agriculture to grow their crops without any use of pesticides or fertilisers. Nutrition - Farm families are given the resources and training to grow kitchen gardens or ‘Kutumba Kai Thotta’ in their backyard to meet their nutritional needs and strengthen food security. Diversifying livelihoods to minimise risk – Women farmers in the project area organise themselves into Enterprise Groups. These enterprise groups carry out income generating activities like millet processing, cold-pressed oil, vegetable production and papad making. GREEN Foundation is in process to identify other income generating activities in consultation with women farmers to diversify livelihoods options and reduce risk on livelihoods. GREEN Foundation provides training to women on different aspects of enterprise development and management. Maximise return to farmers through value addition and direct marketing of impact products – Agricultural producer and value added products are packaged and marketed to rural and urban consumers by Janadhanya Producer Company Private Limited, which is registered as a Producer Company under Section – 8 of the Companies Act. Bringing market, science and community together for a win-win proposition – GREEN Foundation’s work on biodiversity conservation impacts food and nutritional security for producers and consumers, preserves the environment and creates a standard for sustaining agriculture. Genetic Resource, Ecology, Energy and Nutrition Foundation (GREEN Foundation), engaing and incubating Janadhanya ,an NGO which has been engaging with the farmers of the area in order to promote agrobiodiversity conservation and sustainable agricultural practices for over 25 years. Janadhanya is grounded in the larger systemic approach of building ‘Regenerative Communities’. Principles that underpin this approach are, (a) regenerating all four capitals – natural, social, physical and financial; (b) commitment to put these forms of capital in interaction to create abundance; (c) holistic and bio-regional frame of reference; (d) evolving with the existing cultural priorities and expression; (e) focus on both people and ecosystem; and (f) commitment to heal social, economic, environmental injustices in the system. The aim is to ensure that every family that is a part of Janadhanya has access to a set of support and services to undertake crop production, allied activities and any non-farm enterprises, along with addressing family-specific health and nutrition. These family level interventions will be supported with village level actions related to value addition enterprises, marketing and biodiversity conservation on the economic side, and social protection, financial access and institutional development on the social and governance side. COVID-19 Response- As the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic wreaks havoc in the country, the health and safety of our communities has been our top priority. Our Wellness Facilitators have been visiting farm families and screening for COVID-19 symptoms and regularly assessing their oxygen levels. Our nurses are supporting farmers with high-burden diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. by facilitating access to medication and arranging tele consultations with doctors if required. The Wellness Facilitators and nurses are regularly checking in with families who have tested positive for the virus and guiding them through the period of home quarantine, addressing any of their queries and connecting them to doctors when required. Along with the local Primary Health Centres (PHC), vaccination drives have been organized. Our nurses and wellness facilitators are spreading awareness about the COVID vaccine and encouraging the community to take the vaccine, dispelling doubts and fears around the vaccine.
