About This Cause

About SEESHA: SEESHA (Samiti for Education, Environment, Social, and Health Action) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in the year 2003 by renowned educationist & philanthropist Dr. Paul Dhinakaran. Headquartered in Chennai, the organization works towards the holistic development of the underprivileged, downtrodden communities across India. With the continued support of well-wishers & contributors, we have been able to transform the lives of more than 1,50,000 lives every year. Our major project activities are being undertaken in the following States in India: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. SEESHA’s Projects are designed to cater to the four-fold aspects of development - Health, Education & Training, Environment and Livelihood. The following are the glimpse of major Projects carried out by SEESHA- 1. CHILD & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS: At SEESHA, we believe that every child should go to school and receive quality education and support so that they can develop in a holistic manner. Through a variety of projects, we provide quality education, equal opportunities, and a safe environment for their holistic development to children from socio-economically disadvantaged families. A) The project includes providing quality education through SEESHA Learning Centres (Free after school learning program) where nearly 3000 children are receiving free tuition centres across India. B) Every year, 25,000 school-going children are receiving SEESHA School kits as educational incentives to continue learning. C) New Clothes are distributed to 50,000 unprivileged children each year during festive season. D) Scholarships are provided to deserving students from disadvantaged families to continue their higher education. E) On a monthly basis, 120 children living with HIV/AIDS are provided with the nutritional supplements required in their diet to keep them healthy despite their failing immunity. F) More than 170 young people are receiving computer software/Tally training to train them for well-reputed jobs. 2. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROJECT: Through training, awareness, and skill development programs, we transform shy, less educated women into empowered individuals who become great support for their families and communities. A) Affordable vocational skills development programs (Self-sustained programs) More than 380 women from disadvantaged backgrounds are being provided skills training in in-demand trades such as tailoring, beautician, Aari work (Embroidery), jute bag-making etc. across 13 locations. All the programs are being sustained with contributions from the trainees. The women who are from ultra-poor families are given free training. B) Self-Help Groups: 6 functional Self-Help Groups are running with more than 45.5 lakhs been rolled out so far as seed money to support women with entrepreneurial aspirations. 3) SENIOR CITIZEN CARE: We reach out to destitute and abandoned elderly people, helping them to enjoy safe and healthy retirement years. A) Through SEESHA’s Old Age Care Home, we provide a safe dwelling place, medical care, geriatric nursing, physiotherapy, and psycho-social support to senior citizens. B) Through the Elderly Outreach Program, we reach out to destitute elders, support them with basic dry rations, and arrange a get-together to provide a platform for them to express themselves. 3) HEALTHCARE: SEESHA aims to build healthy and happy communities by focusing on the prevention of disease transmission, the promotion of hygienic health practices, and rehabilitation. A) SEESHA’s healthcare programs bring health education, specialized healthcare, and screening services directly to community members and contribute to reducing their health disparities. B) SEESHA’s health outreach extends to remote rural and tribal communities where the access to advanced medical care is limited. 4) CARE FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED: 40 children with special needs are being provided with special education & therapy through the Special Education Program. Differently-abled persons seeking rehabilitation care but who cannot commute to rehabilitation centers are provided therapy & counselling support through our Community-Based Rehabilitation program. 5) ENVIRONMENT: SEESHA believes that the environment is an integral part of any community, and the participation of local people in the protection, management, and appreciation of their surroundings is pivotal to the reduction of pollution and the conservation of the environment. Awareness programs are being conducted to disseminate information on the 'Go Green' initiatives to protect the environment across all the project locations. 6) DISASTER RELIEF OPERATIONS & REHABILITATION PROJECTS: SEESHA provides relief & rehabilitation services to people and communities affected by natural calamities through food supplies, clothing, survival kits, medical support, temporary and permanent solutions for shelter. A) SEESHA’s GAJA Cyclone Rehabilitation Housing Project: 92 families who were adversely affected by the 2018 GAJA cyclone were handed over free concrete houses through this project. B) Several health sub-centers in Ernakulam & Thrissur districts in Kerala State witnessed acute damage due to the 2018 Flood disaster, when provision of essential health services was disrupted. SEESHA partnering with a corporate funding partner worked with Kerala Govt. in rebuilding Primary health sub-centers at Brahmakulam, Kothad, and Poovathussery in Ernakulam & Thrissur districts.
