To enable resource-poor women to empower themselves so that they excel as professionals and/or entrepreneurs, and earn a "livelihood with dignity" in jobs and markets that had traditionally been closed to them
About This Cause
We are a professional feminist organisation working across social and religious divides to enable resource poor women to empower themselves by engaging them in viable non-traditional livelihood options.
We are committed to breaking patriarchal boundaries and structures so that the women can exercise control over their lives and have a life of dignity.
We do this through transformative capacity building programmes around the self and the skills needed for NTL, based on adult learning principles.
We engage with both men and women in their communities so that both can construct a safe and supportive space for their development.
Over the last ten years, Azad has been able to demonstrate what it takes to break the glass ceiling that confines the economic opportunities for resource poor women. It has enabled more than 2000 women to become employable. Starting from 2008, when there were no professional women drivers available, Azad has enabled more than 1000 women across cities in North India to take on driving as professional career. The women drivers have not just become principal bread winners in their families but have significantly transformed their life conditions by also exercising control over the use of the money earned. Together they have provided more than a million safe rides to women users of their services. In communities Azad has been able to help more than 6000 women gain basic citizenship documents which is the first step towards livelihoods with dignity. Azad works across Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata and works in partnership in Ahmedabad, Indore, Bhubaneswar and Lucknow. Azad also coordinates the Non Traditional Livelihoods network of India.
