Mission Statement
Enabling the holistic development of individuals living with Mental Illness and emotional disorders by engaging the vital components of the individual's environment which comprises of family, and various systems such as health care, legal aid, educational institutions, specific geographic communities and society at large in the ongoing process of inclusion.
About This Cause
Over 80 million people suffer from some form of Mental Illness in India. Over 90% remain untreated. Fighting a Mental Illness especially in a society that understands very little of it can be very lonely. Since 2005, MANAV Foundation has been providing opportunities to such individuals to be included in mainstream society. Our Vision is “Inclusion, by widening the horizons of Mental Health to ensure its recognition, importance and acceptance as a necessary component of society.” Our Manav Rehabilitation Centre works towards this vision by offering Rehabilitation and counselling services to adults living with Mental Illness. These services form our line of treatment, which works parallel to clinical treatment (i.e. medications). During the active phase of their Mental Illness, affected individuals often lose touch with subtler skills required for daily functioning in society. These involve daily life skills, communication skills, social skills, and functional skills. During this time, individuals are stigmatized and discriminated against, and often do not realize their condition. Rehabilitation is about re-learning and resuming life as they already knew it, with new insights and decisions related to their future. We have observed the benefits of using a bio-psycho social approach in the treatment of Mental Illness; hence our services involve combining creative therapies, counselling and medicines to facilitate holistic recovery. Our creative therapies include Animal Assisted Therapy, Music Therapy, Dance Movement Therapy, Drama Therapy, Arts Based Therapy, Bowen Therapy, Yoga, Group Therapy Discussions. At MANAV Foundation, we first aid in recognition and acceptance of an individual’s own Mental Illness, and encourage understanding that it does not impede them from leading a fulfilling and engaging life. We facilitate clients to the realization that they are capable of managing themselves and their symptoms with the right treatment. Our therapies are instrumental in leading them to realizations, insights, new understandings, decisions & choices. We also focus on rebuilding skills and helping clients understand their talents and abilities. Every step of MANAV Foundation’s interventions is taken using the involvement of the client themselves as well as their family/caregivers. Involvement of family/caregivers is crucial to this process, as it provides the scope for interventions at home, which then addresses all aspects of the individual’s immediate environment. MANAV Foundation’s Sahyog programme enables our clients’ caregivers to have their own support group to ease their role in this complex process. Our Swayam programme offers vocational training once a client is ready to be reintegrated back into society. Our support group for reintegrated clients, Rainbow, helps reintegrated clients share experiences and overcome obstacles together. We also reach out to those who, not due to Mental Illness, but more so because of temporarily compromised coping skills and capacity, are not able to deal with the demands of their daily lives. This is implemented through the Manav Counselling Centre, which offers need based counselling to those with short-term needs. The foundation has seen many a breakthrough in the area of Mental Health and apart from facilitating these, it is dedicated to increasing awareness on the issue and sounding the need for better facilities. We are committed to reach out to every person in need of our services. This initiative is aided by our organisational mandates which include Publicity, Outreach & Awareness, Training, Volunteering, Advocacy, Resource Generation and Networking. These mandates enable us to educate and sensitise the often unforgiving society that our clients are a part of, while also allowing us to reach out to those who can support us financially. Apart from a “sliding” fee structure that takes into consideration each individual client and family’s economic status, the centre also provides financial aid to those who need the same for medical purposes of psychiatric nature. Travel passes such as train and bus passes are also provided to those who are not able to sustain the expenses incurred by their commute to the centre. In doing any of the above, we ensure that no individual needing the services of the centre is unable to access the same due to reasons arising from circumstances outside their control. To the best of our knowledge, MANAV Foundation is the only organisation in Mumbai that offers such a holistic programme that truly elevates and empowers those living with Mental Illness. Our interventions and mandates go hand-in-hand to help build the healthiest possible association between society and an individual living with Mental Illness.
