About This Cause
TRU for three decades is an effort to reach out to the people in need through comprehensive health and education programmes TRU endevours to promote people to use best of their abilities and resources in matters of health and education without a sense of dependence upon the outside services of the NGO and other opportunities. "Health is not merely absence of disease. It is a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being. In addition to activities for promotion of health and prevention education for various diseases, TRU responds to acute medical needs of the people. TRU believes that medical and educational services should be available to the people as a matter of right and it is a duty of the professionals to extend their services with full dedication to the poor and needy as a matter of routine without a sense of obligation. After three decades of working in community health our wisdom is that improvising health status of a community and therefore individuals is a better way to enhance their physical and social development. TRU experienced that mental health care is a growing need of the rural-tribal population. Economic stress combined with disintegrating community life has added a load of mental illnesses. Severe mental disturbances are observed resulting in family dysfunction of the patient as well as care takers. The economic demands due to mental illnesses are even more pauperising than any other physical illness or social cause. Therefore TRU endevours to provide mental health care through community based approach. TRU's efforts in working for women's development have taught us that formal education for girls is a key to better quality of life of a community. Having worked for provision of supplementary primary education, nonformal education, self-help groups, savings and credit program for women, TRU facilitates now safe and encouraging / enabling environment to study through High-School education for girls from remote rural-tribal villages. As an offshoot of our women's health and development program in 13 slums of Vadodara we run the much required affordable and accessible diagnostic services in Radiology and Pathology. Geographically TRU works in two districts (of Gujarat state in India), viz Vadodara and Panch Mahals. In Vadodara city we have two diagnostic centers - one in Alkapuri and one in Dandia bazar area, to provide X-Ray, Ultrasonography and Pathology services under one roof. PanchMahals(P.M.), one of the most backward and remote districts of the state, we serve in four blocks viz Halol, Kalol, Ghoghamba and Jambughoda covering a population of 7 lacs. Our Programs for rural-tribal people of P.M.: General Health Care(GHC) in four forest centres of Halol taluka, Community Mental Health program (CMHP) in 368 villages, Girls' Education Program(GEP) for 100 girls, Pre-Primary Education Program (PPEP) for 50 children. GHC (1989 till date) offers primary healthcare and referral services to more than 10000 patients every year, within a radius of 20 kms from Shivrajpur, our base in Halol taluka through 5 clinics having best qualified and consistent doctor. CMHP (2004 till date) provides fortnightly Psychiatric clinics in 5 centres with outreach services including identification of patients, treatment, follow up and community based rehabilitation services to 7 lac population in four blocks through trained staff mostly selected from same communities. Nearly 4000 persons with Severe Mental diseases have been rehabilitated in their lives by successfull treatment and hands-holding support of TRU. Many social interventions developed in our CMHP are replicable and adds to the wider pool of activities to bring psychiatry out of four walls of clinics and hospitals. We encompass the large population under ouf MH Awareness programs through High school going students of more than 40 schools, more than 300 village Panchayat bodies (Local Self govt body), many many dairy groups and other Civil Society Groups like Mahila Mandals, Self Help savomgs groups etc. GEP (2005 till date) provides residential help for 100 tribal and backward class girls every year to facilitate High school education in addition to a few vocational skills free of cost. PPEP (2012 till date) started as a day care centre for intellectually deficient children is now a day care centre that includes 50 children (both normal and MR children). TRU enhances local resources - mainly the human resource - by provision of services and education to beneficiaries to bring about sustainable change and further development. The Rahat Nidan Kendra (RNK) (1997 till date) of TRU provides diagnostic services to poor and low income groups of Vadodara city in two centers. Covering more than 20000 patients in a year TRU helps patients by carrying out all pathological - laboratory - tests and radiology services - Digital Xrays, Ultrasonography services - at a highly subsidised rate and provides good quality professional help. TRU provides health training and technical support to various NGOs all over Gujarat for many years. TRU also worked for 6 years (2001 till 2007) in Earthquake affected severely devastated area i.e. Rapar taluka of Kutch district through immediate relief activities and organised ecologically friendly houses and drinking water facilities for a population of 20000 in 15 villages. Along with it we provided regular health and facilitated education services for the people.
