Mission Statement

VISION: “Enough water for all” SRDS dreams of a world where there is plenty of water for everyone.” Our Mission: To end water scarcity in India using an integrated rural development approach to create awareness of the imperative need for Rain Water Harvesting for farmers and communities. We do this through area development, implementation of water harvesting solutions such as bore well recharge, rooftop water harvesting, and farm ponds, as well as women’s empowerment through self-help groups, education on financial literacy, and better living. Goal: “To end water scarcity in India.” Droughts have become a harsh reality to billions of people across the world. With water being the substance that sustains life, it is more important now than ever before to use innovation to bring a steady supply of clean water to the people of Karnataka & beyond

About This Cause

SRDS is an NGO situated in Karnataka India - dedicated to supporting those in rural India whose lives are in difficulty due to drought, water shortage and lack of resources - both related to agriculture and to village life. Our main focus is restoring the levels of potable water in the underground aquifers so that water abundance is available to all. We do this through a variety of methods - (described below.) To support this water work, education and awareness programs are vital. The strengthening of the rural communities so that village life become sustainable and equitable is of great importance so our work extends to a rural development model - specific actions are also described below. 1. Rain water harvesting through bore well recharge: our unique method developed by founder Sikandar Meeranaik - called the twin ring method of bore well recharge is economical effective and sustainable. It utilises easily obtained materials and is implemented on existing bore wells including those that may be fully dried up. The results from this work mean that the farmers and villagers have access to a good potable water supply, for both irrigation and drinking. More variety of crops can be grown and water is available throughout the dry season thereby ensuring a longer cropping season. The recharge system can be fed either by a small holding pond or by harvesting from roof top water. 2. Pond construction for both village and farms. Ponds provide the best water harvesting solution to farmers in the areas of black soil, where bore wells cannot be dug. Farmers are also supported to gain access to government subsidy for this work. The availability of water is valuable to them particularly during dry times after sowing the crop - critical time irrigation. With more available water for farming there are more jobs for the land less labourers. 3. Village Pond cleaning and desilting. Many large village ponds have fallen into disrepair and require restoration. This work will benefit all the villagers and also helps to recharge the aquifers. As the water table is fed from the restored large ponds, also the surrounding open wells and bore wells will benefit from the higher water table. 4. RO water purification installation in the village These installations help around 500 households to have access to pure water at a very low cost. This helps in areas such as Gadag where both fluoride and salt are a problem in the underground water. 80% of disease comes from impure water so this action is very important for the health of the villagers. 5. Mobile solar pump access for farmers: Mobile solar pumps have been designed and provided to small groups of farmers - so that they can move these pumps from farm to farm to utilise as required. This supports those farmers that have no access to government electricity schemes. 6. Self Help Groups and financial literacy programs: Village women are supported to form Self Help Groups so that they can access micro finance and financial literacy programs - thereby assisting them to gain financial independence and to support small business ventures. 7. Integrated Rural Development - Having worked with the rural communities for over a decade and understanding the local issues well, SRDS, along with its water work, implements integrated rural development at the most needed places in Karnataka. The activities are holistic in nature collaborating all verticals of social development i.e. Education, Health, Livelihood, Water conservation and Sanitation and Women Empowerment through enhanced income generation bound programs. A successful village needs an information dissemination centre, acting as one-stop-shop for all needs of rural India such as agricultural schemes and entitlements, students’ scholarships, skill training avenues, credit linkage information and village vigilance system. Therefore a Village Information Centre (VIC) and water and farm management information centre is one of the vital aspects of inclusive development. The core of the work is water as water unites rural communities, SRDS is working actively in the Gadag / Koppal District - a backward isolated area with few resources. Covering 30+ villages in this region we provide a variety of services to enrich the villagers lives and give them access to needed support across all services. These include: a. Evening remedial class for government school students at village level In government schools English is only taught after 4th standard and the level of instruction is often poor. Therefore we have set up remedial classes for these students so that they can gain language skills to support them in their working life. Previously only the wealthy families could access good education but our classes are available to all students. Online classes are also being made available and computer centres with access for poor students are being set up. b Village level medical support: Some village don’t have doctors in our target area and when people are very poor or sick, they are unable to travel to the city for treatment. We have sourced funds to provide a medical van which is assisting them to get to the hospital and we are also setting up central clinics where health education and basic needs are being taken care of. In this time of Covid vaccination centres are being provided locally. c. Food kits are being sourced and distributed to needy families especially those negatively affected by the Covid pandemic - lockdowns and family deaths. d. Establishment of Farmer Producer Organisations, which include farmer training on multiple cropping methods, effective irrigation methods, access to subsidies and marketing information. e. Establishment of village information centres where individuals are able to access online information about all aspects of rural life. f. Horticulture training to the farmers Many farmers do not understand which horticulture crop is best for their land. We assist them by access to soil testing and training in best cropping methods and crops for their specific situation. We use exposure visits to successful famers such as organic farms and those using up to date methods. Drought Relief: SRDS has experience in supporting drought stricken villages. In 2016-17 we conducted a drought relief project with the support of Infosys foundation to provide 3,68,000 litres of drinking water by tanker delivery to 51 villages during drought. It was an operation that required meticulous documentation and reporting. Other projects: SRDS installs rain water harvesting solutions for both urban dwellings and industrial complexes. Using roof top rain water harvesting - and individually designed systems SRDS supports implementation to comply fully with the latest government regulations for these instances. Harvesting the rooftop rainwater saves money, recharge the aquifer thereby ensuring a good supply of water, and can have the beneficial effect of diluting solids in the existing ground water therefore making it more potable.
