About This Cause
ABOUT ROPES: ROPES was registered in 1989 as a secular non-government and not for profit organization has been working in the sphere of promoting and protecting the rights of children and women in the area of education, health, protection, water and sanitation, women empowerment and sustainable livelihood. It considers participation and gender equality as principles to integrate in all its interventions. ROPES located in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, South India. ROPES has registered under FCRA to receive foreign grants and IT exemption under 12 A and 80 G for the donations received. Situation analysis of Dalits, Tribal and most Back ward communities in the target area: The people belong to mainly Dalits and tribal’s community which is known for their illiteracy, poverty and ignorance for generations without proper development even during the present days of globalization. Untouchability and discrimination practice is more in this district especially where ROPES works. Hundreds of children are forced to work in dangerous and unhealthy conditions in factories, bricks industries, cut stones, work in small factories, car workshops , construction sites, as domestic slaves and as prostitutes. Several forms of child abuse are quite common. 70% girls are victim of child marriage. Poverty often leads to child labour. Parents regard their children as additional sources of income. In the Dalit & tribal community infant mortality is high and early marriages immediately after puberty for girl children is considered a great tradition but this as a resultant in a no of cases where the mothers are young but anemic with 2-5 children before they reach/attain 20 years of age. The children are mostly malnourished and normally below average achievers in schools. Innocent children are forced into prostitution, trafficking. They work in agriculture as daily labour. Their poverty is visible in having a single room house without toilet and bathroom facility. The houses mostly have thatch or grass roots without sanitation and ventilation. Even the government assisted houses are known to be leaky and not durable. Some of the photographs attached with this report will reveal the shabby condition and their miserable existence. The people live in abject poverty and unable to provide nutritious meal, clean and good clothes and school stationery for the children at primary school from the meager daily wages which is normally below two dollars. The government provides subsidy for construction of houses in the village only after the family completes laying of foundation with their means. But many of the families find it highly difficult to complete lying of foundation with some paltry sum of money like two to three thousands. This again speaks about the total inability and impoverished condition of the villages that still have the habit of defecation in the open air. These children grow up in poverty, do not have access to education and most of the time they live in remote villages and rural areas. The vision of the organization: “A society in which every child and woman attains their basic rights, protection and development”.
