About This Cause

About Books for All Books for All (BFA) was set up to encourage lesser privileged children develop reading habits. The first Library was started on 30th January 2010 at Government Primary School, Village Gejha, Sector 93, Noida, India. A room was given by the school and Books for All stocked it with story books. Volunteers started visiting the library to encourage children to read. Later a full time Librarian was appointed to look after the Library and engage the children in various activities. Books for All was registered as a Public Charitable Trust on 10th February 2011. Since then we have expanded our area of work which has been benefitting not only children but youth and women as well. Given below are the various programmes that we run: 1. Library cum Creativity Centres in Urban Village Schools The first Library became the model for our future Libraries, which is a Sustainable, Replicable & Scalable model. We decided to keep our operations simple & low cost to reach out to maximum children. We now have six Libraries cum Creativity Centres in NCR, Delhi, India, where children are encouraged to read, draw and paint, participate in singing dancing, quiz and competitions and general awareness programmes. BFA also conducts Earth Day, Independence Day, Dushehra, Diwali and Christmas Day Celebrations, Children’s Day, Teachers’ Day, Annual Day and Sports Day, to name a few. BFA fills the void left by the education systems in schools for the underprivileged. These interventions inculcate in children, a love of reading, curiosity, confidence, teamwork and discipline apart from increasing their knowledge. 2. Sponsored Students - Education of underprivileged students During the library period BFA librarians and volunteers come across students who are eager to obtain better education. To fulfil their dream we started Sponsorship Programme in 2014. Under this programme we mentor bright deserving students and help them get admission in better schools. We also handhold them throughout their years of schooling. Till the end of 2023, BFA has sponsored the education of more than 50 students to good schools. We also coach and mentor them so that they develop them into well rounded individuals. 3. “Saksham’ Career Counselling and Vocational Training Programme In 2020, BFA in partnership with HCL Foundation started Counselling of lesser privileged students of Inter-colleges in Noida about careers and vocational courses that will provide them with skills and make them employable. BFA helps students, who are First Generation Learners, with admissions to selected institutes and mentors them till they complete the course and find employment. BFA trainers also impart soft skills to increase their confidence and communication skills. Till the end of 2023, we have provided career counselling to more than 5000 students and sponsored the vocational training of 350 impecunious students in 28 different courses from 11 reputed institutes. BFA helped 100 students, who had completed their courses, secure jobs assuring salary earnings with dignity. 4. ’Sankalp’ Adult Literacy Programme During visits to the Libraries, it was observed that the mothers of most of the children are illiterate or dropped out of school for one or the other reason. This prompted us to conduct a survey in the nearby areas to understand the gravity of the issue. To our surprise, about 120 women expressed their interest in literacy classes. This motivated BFA to initiate the program for women literacy, SANKALP in November 2021. The literacy centre operates on alternate days and the classes are conducted by a qualified teacher. The programme caters to analphabetic women and currently 50 women have enrolled with us. Apart from Hindi and English literacy, BFA conducts sessions on financial literacy, health and hygiene and other topical subjects. 4. Wall Hung Libraries for Village Schools In 2021, BFA started a drive to raise funds for Wall Hung Libraries (WHL). The objective was to help village schools, that have no dedicated room to spare, with wall hung libraries. Each WHL contains about 100 beautifully illustrated story books in English, Hindi and regional languages. The mission is now being spread to village schools all across the country to bring the JOY OF READING to children who have no access to books other than course books. The illustrated books are attracting students to read and aid learning and understanding, encouraging them to write, draw and dream! Till the end of 2023, BFA has installed 302 WHL in village schools in 24 states of the country. 6. Sparsh - Story Books and Books on General Awareness for Blind and Visually Impaired Students Books For All (BFA) had launched the Wall Hung Libraries (WHL) Project for schools in urban and rural villages in the year 2021 to give the joy of reading to children who have no access to books other than course books and inculcate reading habits among them. The feedback was so encouraging that BFA not only planned a major initiative to expand the WHL Project but also planned to address the reading needs of blind and visually impaired students. Thus SPARSH (Sensory Perception Aids for developing Reading and Studying Habits) for the Visually Challenged Students was launched in October 2023. The initiative aims to provide Braille and Tactile books for blind and visually impaired students. Since October 23, BFA has reached out to more than 100 Blind Institutions & we have provided Braille story books to 40 institutions, catering to the needs of over 1300 visually impaired students and plan for at least 100 schools in 2024-25 How Corporates and Individuals can help In order to scale up its operations and bring the benefits of holistic learning to significant number of children, Books of All would need funding support.
