Mission Statement
Sangath shall work to promote the good health – physical, psychological and social – of children, adolescents and families. The primary focus areas include child development, adolescent and youth health, and mental health.
About This Cause
We are a not-for-profit organisation working in Goa, India for 26 years to make mental health services accessible and affordable. Sangath is committed to improving access to mental health across the age spectrum and we believe this is best achieved by empowering the community. We endeavour to address the psychological and social needs of those in our care through holistic interventions that take care of their bodies as well as their minds. Though we are committed to bringing positive change in society through science and innovative technology, the ‘human’ approach remains at the centre of all we do. Our Story Sangath was registered in 1996, when we began our journey as a modest child development clinic in Goa. Today, Sangath is widely known as one of India’s most reputed not-for-profits in the mental health space. Our path-breaking research and intervention programmes in mental health, child development, adolescent health, addictions research and interventions have gained international recognition. Our singular desire is to bridge the treatment gap for mental health problems in India and other low- and middle-income countries Sangath believes in empowering ordinary people, whom we often call lay counsellors, to deliver our psychosocial interventions in their communities. The success of the interventions we develop is centred on ensuring that they are affordable, easily accessible and acceptable to these communities. We take pride in our work, that has been recognised nationally and globally. We have been appointed a nodal agency for the National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Disabilities. Our work has also been commended through numerous national and international awards which include WHO’s ‘The Public Health Champion’ award and the ‘Blessed Mother Teresa’ prize from the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Goa. In 2015, our co-founder Dr Vikram Patel was named among the 100 most influential people in the world by the Time Magazine. We hope you have enjoyed reading about the things we do.
