About This Cause

Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses (SPYM) is a pan Indian organization with over 36 years of experience & expertise working with the most marginalized and vulnerable populations in the area of community mobilization, socio-economic development and health. . As per the last census data India has over 4,00,000 beggars with 81,000 only being in West Bengal. The statistics also reveal that there were 2.2 lakh male beggars and 1,91 lakh female beggars in the country. Uttar Pradesh was second on the list with 65,835 beggars followed by Andhra Pradesh with 29,723 and Madhya Pradesh with 28,695. The capital of the country Delhi recorded to have 2,187 beggars but according to other reports, this number goes as high as 60,000 and 80,000 in Mumbai. Child beggars can be seen in every city and town in India. Every year, 44,000 children fall into the clutches of the gangs (cf. Kaushik, 2014). The All-India Citizen Alliance for Progress and Development (AICAPD) and Innovation Mobile Schools, in partnership with the J.K. Business School, Gurgaon, conducted the survey in Gurgaon on 6,000 roadside beggars in the age group of 6-14 years. SPYM aims to reduce beggary, increase awareness of these highly deprived persons about their entitlements and mainstreaming them into the society.
