About This Cause

Where you are born should not limit how far you go. Yet children from marginalized communities have to cross several roadblocks and obstacles to fulfill their aspirations. And we are trying to change that! Makkala Jagriti founded in 2003, is a non-governmental organization that empowers marginalized children and youth through a holistic approach to learning. Our mission is to ensure access to quality learning by augmenting their school education through formal and non-formal interventions. We work with different stakeholders like parents, teachers, communities and the civil society at large towards our purpose. Our values At Makkala Jagriti we see the world from a child’s point of view. Our child-centric approach allows us to respect the child’s physical, professional and learning boundaries. We unconditionally accept all children, irrespective of their background, gender and ability level. We trust and believe that the children have the freedom to make their own choices. Overall objective To provide opportunities for holistic learning and development of children and youth of marginalised communities and help them discover their true potential. Specific objective • To influence towards the institutionalization of the Holistic Development in the public education system particularly early childhood and primary education. • To facilitate and establish a child-centred approach by involving parents, teachers and community members • To facilitate a process of transformation within the community by empowering youth as change agents Population that we cover Our interventions primarily focus on children and youth from marginalized communities, who are often first-generation learners lacking the confidence, motivation and capacity to remain enrolled in school and learn. They are mostly from urban as well as rural areas, studying in Government run/ Government aided schools and shelter homes. Besides, children from economically marginalised sections, these children also comprises of street connected children, children at-risk of being exploited and children those have ran away from their protective environment. Makkala Jagriti believes in a 360 degree approach to its intervention and thus the population that it works with includes varied stakeholders such as parents, teachers and community members who can play a unique role in supporting children and youth for their growth and development. Our Reach At present, we reach 18000 children and youth across 253 centres in Karnataka. Our Programs Makkala Jagriti’s continuum approach includes three distinct programs: a) Early childhood Care and Education (3-6 years) b) Holistic Development Learning Centres (6-14 years) c) Yuva Jagriti (15-29 years) Makkala Jagriti’s continuum approach is focused on providing an opportunity to marginalised children to discover their creativity and engage in a learning process that helps in achieving their dreams. It starts with Early childhood care and education , laying the foundation of school readiness in children , goes on to strengthen Holistic development in children in primary school and empowering adolescents and youth to define their lives. To achieve this, parents and teachers form the backbone of the environment. Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) The Early Childhood Education programme is an initiative with an objective to enhance school readiness of children in the age group of 3 – 6 years. Understanding the importance of pre-school education and the foundational learning that it ensures to children, our programme aims to strengthen pre-school education and improve the infrastructure of the Anganwadi Centres to aid good quality pre-school education. As there is a strong focus to cater to the health and nutritional mandates of the population that it caters to, pre-school education often takes a backseat. Our initiative ensures that this need is addressed through effective and regular implementation of ‘Chili-Pili’, which is the state curriculum for pre-school education and also other fun, attractive and engaging learning activities implemented by our facilitators at the Anganwadi Centres (Pre-school centres). With the moving up from the early childhood, the children, in schools or community receives holistic development learning experience through our engagement. Holistic development learning centres (HDLC) This approach is aimed at providing opportunities for holistic learning and development of children of the marginalized communities, aged between 6 – 14 years and to help them in unleashing their true potential. Recognizing the importance of holistic learning in a child’s life, we set up learning centers inside govt. primary schools, urban poor settlements and Govt. children’s homes to ensure that every child has access to quality and well-rounded education till the age of 14 years. Our Holistic development approach is delivered through the ‘S.P.I.C.E.’ model, that focuses on Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional development. We implement our program through a child centric approach, creating a non-judgmental, non-biased and non-threatening environment; using methods of activity-based and experiential learning. This is implemented by full-time facilitators, resource persons and volunteers. We also build capacity for govt. school teachers by providing technology and activity based curriculum to make optimize classrooms’ effectiveness that can help transform these classrooms into vibrant learning spaces. Understanding that the need for institutionalization of this model as part of strengthening Public Education System, we enter into MOU’s with the government to implement HDLC in varied government institutions ranging from govt. primary schools, government aided schools and Govt. children’s homes. This is an important strategic move by Makkala Jagriti to ensure that children from marginalized communities are not deprived of holistic learning and development opportunities to carve out a better future for themselves. Realizing that these adolescents are also aspiring to be part of the growing job market with specific skill sets and an ambition to achieve a sustained growth in their chosen livelihood option, Makkala Jagriti started their Yuva Jagriti program. Youth Program (Yuva Jagriti) Yuva Jagriti is aimed at developing inner strength of urban poor youth to take control over their lives in deciding their future with livelihood options that match their aptitude, interest, and skills. This program works towards facilitating an environment that paves a journey to build knowledge, competence, skills, attitudes as a preparation to enter the job market for urban poor youth. Our program is built on the belief that youth empowerment initiatives needs to focus on building the emotional intelligence / stability / nurturance of the youth that it will help them find fulfillment in their work, sustaining them in their lives. We set up Yuva Café that acts as a HUB to address the issues around their attitude in achieving their life goals. The first step is to address their emotional needs through consistent facilitation of personality development programs, mentoring and coaching. This supports the youth to discover themselves and have a transformational journey in realising their inner potential. This has fueled their confidence, risk management, entrepreneurial ability, self-assurance and self-motivation to help them overcome their overwhelming emotional, social and economic circumstances. This approach helps the youth to discover themselves and have a transformational journey in realizing their inner potential We believe that Yuva Jagriti will enable completion of our 360-degree continuum process to empower a child to become confident, skilled youth with dignified income opportunities as per their aspirations and expectations. Changes in the ground Changes we have seen in Children • Decline in Absenteeism and Drop outs from school • Strengthened conceptual understanding of academic subjects and reading levels • Increase in Emotional stability, Self-confidence, Self awareness, Leadership Skills, Creative thinking, Social Awareness and aspirations • Children have become role models and change agents for their communities Changes we have seen in Parents, teachers, schools : • We have been successful in transforming learning environments in schools. • The SPICE(Holistic) learning Method has been institutionalized in the Government schools where we work as the implementation is done by signing an MOU between the department of Education, Government of Karnataka and Makkala Jagriti. • Attitudes of parents have changed from being the recipient of the program to an active stakeholder of this process • Communities, where we work, have bestowed the trust and belief in Makkala jagriti’s efforts by being part of the program • Created a non-threatening and enabling learning environment in schools
