Mission Statement

Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC), established (in 1996) and administered by the Cachar Cancer Hospital Society, a not-for-profit making NGO registered under the Societies Registration Act. Our hospital sees over 3000 new and over 14000 follow-up patients annually. Most of them hail from economically weaker sections of the community; they are daily wage earners and need multiple forms of support to enable them to complete treatment. The hospital has taken up measures aimed to help patients to complete treatment successfully while striving to offer the best treatment possible to all the patients irrespective of their socio-economic status.

About This Cause

Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC), established (in 1996) and administered by the Cachar Cancer Hospital Society, a non-profit NGO registered under the Societies Registration Act, is located on the outskirts of Silchar town in the Barak Valley of Assam in India. The society came into existence in 1992 as a result of a desperately felt need for a cancer hospital (since the only cancer hospital in the entire northeast was in far away Guwahati) with three principal objectives: (1) to make people aware of cancer, adopt preventive measures and seek early detection (2) to establish a full-fledged cancer hospital to provide meaningful services to all suffering people and (3) to set up a cancer research centre. Public philanthropy helped in the construction of the Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre on land (11 bighas) allotted by the Government of Assam. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by the late Mr. Hiteshwar Saikia, the then chief minister of Assam. The hospital serves an extremely underserved and economically impoverished community of patients from the Barak Valley and other districts of Assam state and the states of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram, etc. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, the annual incidence of cancer in the north east is well above the national figures of approximately 100 per 1,00,000 with Assam alone adding roughly 26,000 new cancer patients every year. One of the primary reasons for the high incidence of cancer in Northeast India is high prevalence tobacco use- both smoking and non-smoker. Other factors might be related to ethnic variations, socio-cultural habits, pesticide and dietary habits. The average cancer patient who approaches a treatment centre in the Northeast is often low in awareness, has little income, faces communication, transportation and accessibility hurdles and tends to wait until an advanced stage to see a physician. The resources to treat (finances, infrastructure, trained manpower) are not commensurate with the need. About 60% of the patients visiting the hospital earn an income of Rs. 6000 or less per month. 80% of them are daily wage earners – labourers, tea garden and agricultural workers. The hospital makes efforts to ensure a standard of care to all patients irrespective of their socio-economic status. The hospital offers comprehensive cancer care. It has developed the departments of surgical, radiation and medical oncology since 2007. The hospital’s microvascular surgery programme for post-resection reconstruction and limb salvage surgery programmes for limb sarcomas are unique in the North East. The laboratory services, established with a one-time grant from the Government of Assam, have facilities for automated biochemistry and haematology, frozen section in addition to conventional histopathology. The pharmacy offers medicines and consumables at highly discounted prices to enable patients to access treatment at low costs.
