Mission Statement

Indian Cancer Society - Delhi is a volunteer based organisation working in the field of cancer control for over thirty three years through a twin pronged approach of awareness and preventive screening. We also provide emotional and a measure of financial support to individuals affected and afflicted with cancer and look into mainstreaming cancer survivors to normal living by providing complementary therapy. Indian cancer society - Delhi provides supplementary nutrition to children suffering from cancer by way of home cooked meal and food supplements and brassiers and body forms to any woman who has undergone mastectomy in Delhi NCR region under restoring Body image program.

About This Cause

The Indian Cancer Society, Delhi is a volunteer based NGO working in the field of cancer control since 1983 . Our Statement of Intent is The Conquest of Cancer by Choice; not Chance over the years. STRENGTHS OF ICS: • Indian Cancer Society Delhi has been conducting preventive screening since 1983 and we have the longest running, non-Commercial Cancer Detection Centre in Delhi, NCR region. • Community Outreach stretching over 33 years. • Network of Grass Root level NGO’s & Women Self Help Groups • Longstanding association with likeminded organizations • Strong Advisory Board • Screenings by Doctors and trained technicians • Information about Local Oncologists, Experts and Hospitals, as required. National and International Affiliations: 1. ICS works closely with the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Delhi Administration., & NDMC. 2. ICS is affiliated with International bodies such as: • The International Union for Cancer Control (UICC) • The World Health Organization (WHO) • American Cancer Society • Cancer Control Australia • Cancer Research, UK We are early signatories to WHO’s FCTC protocol, and are members of the FCA, the global guardians of Tobacco Control. We have an FCRA account. Activities undertaken by Indian Cancer Society - Delhi: Cancer Awareness: Our Awareness group of trained volunteers, ICS Cancer Jagriti, delivers cancer awareness talks at a wide variety of locations, ranging from schools and colleges, offices and factories, women’s’ groups, urban slums, villages, and with other socially committed organizations. We have trained Health Workers of other NGO’s & Delhi Administration, working in the Basti areas, so that our message of Cancer Awareness gets a sustained follow-up. Speakers carry instructive video films, as well as information literature, which is given free of cost. The Schools programme carries cancer education to a receptive audience.It concentrates on Preventible Health issues caused by tobacco & drug abuse, healthy diet, etc. School Teachers are trained to understand how lifestyle choices made in youth create fertile ground for disease to grow. Radio is a Voice Multiplier: The use of FM channels carries our message further afield. We find that our programmes are reaching a wider audience, when AIR airs them on other channels. A Cancer Helpline 99 105 16562 is very popular. Focus has shifted from requests for financial help to request for information. Cancer Screening: ICS offers Cancer Screening at the Cancer Detection Centre, 42 Babar Road, New Delhi 110 001. The Centre is open on all working days from 0900 to 1200 hours. The Centre is served by 3 specialist doctors of ENT, Gynecology and Surgery, supported by a team of technicians. The package includes physical examination, ENT, blood test, chest xray, hemogram, clinical breast examination,pap smear, mamograms ( on required basis) and examination of men by a male physician. by these experienced doctors. You can avail a screening for cancer at minimal, heavily subsidized cost. No prior appointment required, and the entire process takes only 35 minutes . Mammography is available on our Mobile Medical Van AshaKiran. AshaKiran is stationed at Babar Road on Mondays & Thursdays, so one can avail a Walk-in service together with the Screening.. Since November 2010 we offer HPV/DNA tests at the Cancer Detection Centre, Babar Road, . We have several “free service‘months - In April, we offer free PSA tests for male customers availing of Screening. Women get free screening in October & November each year. In addition, all Screening is heavily subsidized. Mobile Cancer Screening. Cancer Screening at your doorstep! 40 persons are screened in a 3-hour period by our specialist staff. This service is available on weekends, and on weekday afternoons. Bookings can be made through our office, and a payment is required to be made in advance to confirm the booking. Philanthropic individuals and organizations often sponsor camps for people living in the slums of Delhi. The Mobile Service is an essential part of the Community Projects, which ICS undertakes in the basti’s (slums) around Delhi.The Mobile Medical Vans are equipped with Xray & Mammography machine and have installed tele-radiology Reporting Service, This is the first tele-radio facility on a moving platform in India. ICS Delhi has converted Medical Records at the Cancer Detection Cente into Electronic Format. We are integrating EMR, Tele radiology and data for easy access to Research. All data is saved on Cloud. This is an on-going Project of great importance, making epidemiological data available for research. ICS Delhi has collaborated with Public Health Foundation of India in addition to independent Research, in analyzing the enormous store of original & authentic data from our Cancer Detection Centre. 4 studies have been accepted for Publication in the past 2-3 years. More study is under way. Projects: ICS undertakes Earmarked Community Projects supported by corporate houses as part of their CSR Projects. We screen around 12,000 persons annually. Over 2000 women from disadvantaged areas are screened for Cervical Cancer each year. The alarming incidence of oral cancers is being followed up with Counseling. Youth Projects: Projects to capture attention & involve Young People in Cancer Control are essential to ICS. We work with NSS, NCC in several colleges, in year-long activity. We accept International Interns through AIESEC, as well as Indian students undertaking short-term work with us. Young people/Interns study our working, and carry ICS message to different Schools or Social groups. ICS Emotional Support group Cancer Sahyog: Since 1991, this Support group for people living with cancer has been working under the umbrella of ICS Delhi. Founded by a cancer survivor, all members of Cancer Sahyog have a personal experience with cancer. Volunteers visit 10 city Hospitals ranging from Govt (AIIMS/IRCH) to mid-level & Super Specialty Hospitals. Volunteers are Cancer Survivors or immediate Care givers. They are not Counselors, but are trained in basic Cancer Information, as well as Counseling Skills. Besides offering a listening ear and a shared experience, volunteers provide literature, helpful suggestions and tips regarding the side effects of treatment. They do NOT offer Medical Advice. This is left strictly to the Doctors, with whom Volunteers develop a relationship of mutual regard & trust. Most of all, volunteers in hospitals offer hope of Life after Cancer. Cancer Sahyog offers a measure of financial assistance to deserving cases.Financial assistance of over Rs 30 – 50 lakhs per annum is disbursed to needy patients. All of this money is collected through Donations from public spirited persons. Cancer Sahyog is the Founder of an all-India movement of Cancer Care India, an umbrella organization for Care Organizations. This was undertaken as a Millenium measure in 2002. Breast Cancer Care. This group caters to Breast Cancer Survivors. They provide badly needed advice on prosthesis and bra’s; as well as living life under altered circumstances. They also join Volunteers from Jagriti & Sahyog in spreading awareness about Breast Cancer. This group has helped set up a Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Centre at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, with support from Doctors & Nurses, recognizing the needs of women beyond mere medical intervention. Care of the scar & recognition of the need for immediate restoration of body image through supply of free Bras & Prosthesis,Workshops on Breast Cancer in Young Women – are held in October at Corporate Offices with large female work force, emphasizing the role of Prevention. Complementary healing Centre– ICS Prashanti- is ICS's Healing Centre. It encourages a serene return to normal living after cancer. Patients and Survivors are encouraged to explore the various therapies on offer, and use the one of their choice to better their quality of life. Prashanti houses the lymphopress sleeve available to Breast Cancer Survivors suffering Lymph edema. It also has Mammography & DEXA services at highly subsidized rates available for follow-up as much as for Screening . Prashanti is also home to a Child Nutrition programme. Children (and Parents) avail a hot, home-cooked meal every Tuesday. In addition, ICS works with AIIMS and Chacha Nehru Bal chikatsalay to offer Protein Supplementary food to children as advised by the Pediatricians. Child Cancer has been a long standing concern of ICS. Delhi was Implementation Partner of the NDTV Fortis Cancerthon that raised Rs 72 lakhs for Children with Cancer. Funds have been disbursed to 38 children in Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore & Chennai. Events • The annual Walk for Cancer Awareness is a popular fixture on the Delhi calendar. • A popular Schools Event is held on World No-Tobacco Day, where schools participate in a 5-min Skit & Poster competition. The number of Schools participating has grown. Its success also inspired a Corporate version. • Rise against cancer - a community based event which involves the whole neighbbourhood - schools, hospital, RWAs together to spread awareness on cancer. • ICS Cancer Sahyog’s annual Seminar addresses issues of importance to cancer survivors. • Cancer Survivors Day (in February each year) is a Celebration of Life, emphasizing the beauty of life after Cancer. Survivors Day is a celebration of Life after Cancer. It will be celebrated as always on the second Saturday in February at Delhi’s fun hot-spot Dilli Haat. •Social media- is popular with Internet users. We get calls from all across the country. We attempt to reach out to people with information and latest news. Face book, local circles and twitter. Cancer insurance: ICS was the first to offer Cancer Insurance in collaboration with New India Assurance Company. Presently, there are two slabs of cover available.
