About This Cause
MAMTA is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 1990. It is registered as a not-for-profit institution under the Societies Registration Act 1860. MAMTA started as a clinic for maternal and neonatal health care in Tigri slums, located in South Delhi. In its journey of 35 years, the organization has diversified in critical areas of public health, and its determinants are based on life course, gender-based, continuum of care, and inclusive approach. The organization has been able to reach more than 300 districts in 26 states and union territories of India and has also reached 8 countries such as Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Burundi, Cambodia, Indonesia and Sweden either by direct interventions or indirectly through more than 200 collaborative NGO partners by building their capacities. MAMTA has impacted over 70 million lives through its interventions. MAMTA has the distinction of building the capacities of CSOs/NGOs, Government, and Academia on Adolescent/Young People’s Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights in six more countries of South and Southeast Asia. Mamta had displayed futuristic and evidence-based planning and adaptation of thematic domains/issues to address public health challenges. Our thematic journey confirms how it started focusing on adolescent health, sexuality & gender education, sexual and reproductive health, and non-communicable diseases much earlier even when these were not listed on priority by the policymakers and implementors. MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child has played a pivotal role in shaping adolescent health policies in India through sustained engagement with government and technical institutions. Its evidence-based inputs and strategic partnerships have led to the conceptualization of the Link Worker Scheme, positioned youth and women’s health through a gender and sexuality lens, and earned recognition as the National Technical Resource Institution by NACO. MAMTA has collaborated with national bodies like NACO, the Ministry of HRD, and UN agencies to strengthen the Adolescent Education Program (AEP), contributing to its revision, toolkit development, and rollout guidelines. It pioneered the establishment of India’s first Center of Excellence for Adolescent Health and Development and was instrumental in authoring sections on adolescent health in both the Tenth and Eleventh Five-Year Plans. As Chair of the NACP-III subgroup on children, adolescents, women, and gender, and a key contributor to the RKSK Strategy—including the Peer Educators training module—MAMTA continues to champion integrated and inclusive approaches to adolescent well-being nationwide. At present, MAMTA has a strong institutional framework in terms of its internal policies, legal sanctions, and skill set to meet the emerging demands in the themes of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health, and Nutrition (MNCHN); Adolescent Health, Communicable Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases. Furthermore, the team is also developing an integration of climate change and livelihoods to improve health outcomes. Till date, MAMTA has published more than 140 publications in peer reviewed journals globally. MAMTA has won more than 20 awards from respected institutions as a recognition of its pursuit of excellence in service
