About This Cause
AIM: To provide residential care and rehabilitation of HIV/AIDS affected destitute-orphaned children and women. ORGANISATIONAL INFORMATION: The sight of a young child rummaging for food in a dustbin next to its dying destitute mother moved the late Smt. Vijayatai Lawate (a social worker and crusader for the rights of children), to take immediate measures for AIDS afflicted children and women, so that they would live and die with dignity. She gathered well wishers and social reformers to form a Trust to support her venture. Thus, Manavya was born on 18th June 1997 – and soon became a haven for destitute children and hapless women – all victims of HIV /AIDS. Manavya office is located in the heart of the city to avail easy access for the administrative requirement. Rapid development of Pune city also brought with it a turbulent rise in HIV/AIDS cases. Reports of deaths of family heads and women /families being thrown out of their rightful house and denied shelter food and support were on the rise. Unwanted by the society, the women and children knocked at all shelter homes only to find the doors closed. Ignorance, apathy and fear about the affliction made matters worse for the surviving victims Despair, frustration and hopelessness drove some to suicide leaving orphaned children. Many orphanages refused to admit affected children. These factors compelled late Smt. Vijayatai Lawate to establish a separate shelter. She soon realized the apathy and indifference of the urban community, which refused to rent her a room to house the destitute HIV, afflicted children. She moved out into the outskirts of Pune to a small village Bhugaon. It was in the year 1998 that a purchase of 25000 sq.ft.of land on the outskirts of Pune led to a shelter home for the orphaned children. A permanent home Gokul sprang up later. But it remains secluded from the main village. Its children lead secluded lives, as the neighborhood villagers prevent them from socializing with the community. However, the Manavya trustees are determined that the children at Gokul get a fair fighting chance to survive and overcome odds to get their rights for food clothing, health, shelter, education and socialization. It has been a constant struggle to meet the needs of these special children, protecting them from vagaries of environment and community, getting the best of medical aid, proper staff to care for them, education and skills to give them a chance to enjoy their childhood without pain and tears. Although death looms large at every step, the Gokul children are groomed to put up a brave front – to live and enjoy each day. Initially the shelter consisted of four walls with a tin roof where the first batch of 10 children found their own home. As pressure increased to accommodate more children. The non-infected children were rehabilitated in other orphanages and Manavya began to cater for the HIV cases only. In 2003 a benefactor helped Manavya build a building-complex to house these children. MISSION: To enable children and women living with HIV, get a fair fighting chance to survive and overcome odds and to ensure their rights to food, clothing, health, shelter and education without social discrimination.
