About This Cause

SVYM with an aim to promote good health and well being of the rural and tribal community started providing free health care 40 years ago. SVYM is providing free and subsidized health care for the underprivileged community through the Vivekananda Memorial Hospital, a 100 bedded tribal rural hospital located in Saragur of Mysuru district on the belts of Bandipur national forest. Vivekananda Memorial Hospital (VMH) is a multi-specialty, non-profit hospital with 24/7 emergency and critical care facility. The hospital provides full time services in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, General medicine, Ophthalmology, Pathology, HIV medicine and Anesthesia and part time services in the specialties of ENT, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Speech and Hearing Services and General surgery. The hospital has well equipped Operation Theatre, ICU facility, Diagnostic wing, Labour room and Neonatal ICU. Integration of Allopathy and Ayurveda is a unique feature of the hospital. Annually, an average of 50,000 people avail outpatient services and 6000 people avail In Patient services in the hospital. 30% of these patients are from indigenous tribal groups many of whom suffer from genetically transmitted Sickle Cell Disease. The prevalence of Tuberculosis is also 4 times the national average. Low awareness, poor household infrastructure, low priority for health results in most of them seeking health care only in very adverse health situations. Economic hardship is only one of the many reasons. At any given point of time about 15-20% of the patients are admitted with critical illness. It is but very human not to refuse care for all these people in time of dire need SVYM also runs several community based health interventions like Palliative Care program with free home based care as well as institutional care, a Mobile health Unit reaching the doorsteps of 50 remote tribal hamlets, Reproductive and child health, HIV care and Control program, Comprehensive Care and support for specially abled and Water Sanitation and Hygiene to restore good health and well being of the community.
