About This Cause
Udhavum Ullangal is a registered public charitable trust, started its journey as early as in 2000 with a main focus on Education, Health and Skill Development. Udhavum Ullangal has been supporting under privileged students whose parents were unable to support the increasing cost of their children’s education. EDUCATION Udhavum Ullangal extends support to under privileged school children by providing school fees, uniform, note books, etc. from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chingleput & Virudhunagar Districts in South India where dropouts from schools are still higher and comparatively less number of children is pursuing higher education in degree/professional colleges. Access to education has always remained a longed for luxury for underprivileged children falling under the category of disabled / disadvantaged, single parent, deserted women and visually impaired parents. The parents are not able to educate their children because of low income and poverty. Every year we give educational assistance to more than 1000 children falling under the category of physically challenged / disadvantaged, single parent, deserted women and visually impaired parents. We conduct mentor-ship program every month to create interest in studies and to monitor the progress of these students in their studies. We are now planning to adopt these children for educational and other essential support(Employability skills) till completion of their higher studies and place them in a job through our network of well-wishers. HEALTH Udhavum Ullangal has undertaken to fulfill the vision of Dr. Shanta, Chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute by reaching out to the rural Tamil Nadu, educate them, create awareness, screen for potential incidence and support where required. Udhavum Ullangal took this mandate and successfully launched in 2011, a fully equipped centre, “Nellai Cancer Care Centre” with a focus on “Prevention, early detection and support programme”. We have been leveraging Cancer Institute’s knowledge and expertise in the cure of the poor. Our medical team has been trained by Cancer Institute (WIA) Adyar, under the mentorship of Dr. Shanta and the lab at Tirunelveli has been set up with the help of “Association of Indian Pathologists in North America, Harvard” with high quality standards for accurate diagnosis. Our learning and experience stem from over 1544 camps we have conducted through which we educated 1,42,655 screened 37,653 and extended support for 103 patients, whose lives have been saved over the last 8 years. This entire programme is being mentored by Dr.Shanta, Chairperson of Cancer Institute, Adyar (WIA),, who is also in our Advisory Board for this project, in addition to an Eminent Administrator, Mr. T.S. Krishnamoorthy, I.A.S. Former Chief Election Commissioner of India who provides valuable guidance at a strategy level. Our mission is to go to the people, rather than wait until they come to us. The Cancer Prevention Centre team has been trained by the Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai in performing oral cancer screening, clinical breast examination and cervical cancer screening using VIA and PAP smear tests. Persons presenting with the disease, lesions, abnormal cell changes etc. are then referred to a specialist (Referral Doctor) for further diagnosis and treatment. The patients, identified in the screening process in Tirunelveli district have been supported by one or more of the following treatment options: (a) Tirunelveli Government hospital under CM’s insurance scheme (b) subsidised treatment at private hosptials including Krishna Hospital, Tirunelveli, Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai and Cancer Institute, Adyar. This programme has been found successful and focused in detecting the early cancer cases and treating them. The current set up of Udhavum Ullangal at Tirunelveli , “Nellai Cancer Care Center” has a base office and an extensive cytopathology laboratory set up with the help of experts from Association of Indian Pathologists in North America.
