About This Cause
Avanti Fellows is a 14 year-old not-for-profit organization co-founded by IIT Bombay Alum, Akshay Saxena. Avanti’s mission is to help students lift themselves & their families out of poverty in a single generation through access to quality STEM undergraduate courses and careers. Avanti works with 9 large public school systems (Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti) to create system-wide test-preparation programs for national entrance exams for engineering, medical and other technical education in STEM. Avanti’s programs serve about 30,000 high-school students (Grades 9-12), across 28 states and union territories. About 60% of Avanti’s students are girls. Once enrolled, students receive rigorous academic tutoring for 12-20 hours per week in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. In addition to academic tutoring, our programs focus on career guidance and building critical life skills like agency and self-efficacy. We run additional programming for Girl students that focuses on overcoming gender stereotypes and increasing participation in STEM careers (specially technical courses). The majority of our students learn online - making our programs amongst the largest online at-home learning programs globally. In addition, we operate in-person tutoring programs in 26 schools for academically gifted students. These programs focus on placing students in the top 5% STEM colleges in India. Avanti’s programs have amongst the highest success rates at national competitive exams in India. 30% of all our students who appeared for India’s highly competitive entrance examination JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) Main 2023 qualified the exam (15% is the national average).13% of Avanti students who appeared for these examinations got placed into the top 5% STEM colleges in 2023. Our work is supported by charitable grants from both Indian CSR and International foundations, including the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Morgridge Family Foundation, Douglas B. Marshall Foundation, Apollo Opportunity Foundation, Tools, Agency Fund, USAID, J. P. Morgan, Infosys Foundation, Fidelity Asia Pacific Foundation, Godrej, TATA group, Capgemini and many others. Avanti’s work has been recognized through Akshay Saxena’s fellowships from Echoing Green, Draper Richards Kaplan & Ashoka and awards: Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 by the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship & the IIT Bombay Young Alumni Achiever Award. We have also launched our first podcast series, "Avanti: Yes She Can!" This series dives into the journeys of some powerhouse women featuring inspiring conversations around how they have broken through gender, institutional, circumstantial barriers—overcoming immense challenges to rise to the top as CEOs, filmmakers, and social entrepreneurs.
